According to reports from Bhawna Gupta, school-related expenses increase by approximately 8% annually, creating significant long-term financial planning challenges for parents. A family currently spending ₹2 lakh annually on education expenses may need to set aside more than double that amount after 10 years if costs continue rising at this rate. The analysis reveals that education inflation compounds over time, making early planning essential for financial preparedness.
As reported by Bhawna Gupta, the future education cost is calculated using compounding inflation principles. The formula Future cost = Present cost × (1 + inflation rate)^number of years applies to a ₹2 lakh annual expense. This calculation shows that after one year, the expense would rise to approximately ₹2.16 lakh, after five years to ₹2.94 lakh, and after 10 years to ₹4.32 lakh. The analysis demonstrates how the compounding effect creates substantial increases over time, with the gap widening as each year's increase is calculated on the previous year's higher amount.
According to the report, the actual education cost may exceed school fees alone, including transport expenses rising with fuel costs, coaching, sports, extracurricular activities, and additional learning programmes. A family currently spending ₹2 lakh annually may eventually need significantly more than ₹4.32 lakh if these additional expenses also rise at the same 8% annual rate. The analysis notes that the 8% inflation assumption is only an example, with actual fee increases varying based on school type, city, and education level.
As reported by Bhawna Gupta, parents can build an education fund gradually rather than arranging the entire future amount at once. For families with children several years from higher classes or college, starting with fixed monthly contributions can help manage the burden. The longer the planning timeframe, the more opportunity the money has to grow, with annual education target reviews recommended to adjust savings amounts if school fees rise faster than expected. The report emphasizes that college costs can be much higher, especially for professional courses or education abroad, with a ₹10 lakh course today potentially costing ₹21.59 lakh after 10 years at the same 8% annual rate.
