Himachal Pradesh achieved a significant milestone in its horticulture sector with the first export consignment of 400 kg of cherries and 400 kg of plums to Oman via air cargo. According to reports from Business Standard, Revenue and Horticulture Minister Jagat Singh Negi flagged off this historic consignment from Chandigarh on Saturday. The fruits were produced by six progressive farmers from the Jadol-Tikkar and Bagi areas of Shimla district, marking a proud moment for the state's horticulture sector. Minister Negi emphasized that Middle East and Gulf countries are emerging as large and promising export markets for Himachal Pradesh's fruits. According to Business Standard, the minister urged farmers to cultivate high-quality fruit varieties in line with international market demand so that Himachal Pradesh's fruits could establish a distinct identity in global markets. He expressed confidence that this initiative would not only increase the income of the state's fruit growers but also help establish Himachal Pradesh as a prominent player on the global fruit export map.
The export initiative has been undertaken by the Himachal Pradesh Horticultural Produce Marketing and Processing Corporation (HPMC) in collaboration with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. According to the latest reports, the HPMC has borne the costs associated with grading, packing, quality testing and other export-related arrangements with APEDA's support, ensuring farmers receive necessary assistance to access international markets. The air transportation would enable the fruits to reach overseas markets quickly while maintaining their freshness and premium quality. As reported by Business Standard, the initiative was preceded by a workshop organized by APEDA and HPMC on 7th June 2026 in Theog, where detailed discussions were held on promoting the export of Himachal Pradesh's stone fruits to the Middle East and Gulf markets.
Minister Negi indicated that future efforts would be expanded to explore export opportunities for apples and other horticultural produce as part of the state's comprehensive export strategy. The HPMC would continue to prioritize the interests of orchardists by developing new export opportunities in the coming months. This represents only the beginning of Himachal Pradesh's international horticulture export journey, with the state positioning itself to become a significant player in global fruit markets through strategic partnerships and quality-focused production.
