KVR Murty assumed charge as Whole-Time Member at the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on Wednesday, bringing over three decades of experience across public finance, corporate regulation and national security-linked financial oversight. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved his appointment on March 11, with his tenure spanning three years. With this appointment, SEBI now has four whole-time members, filling all sanctioned positions on the board. The regulator had been operating with vacancies in these positions, making Murty's induction significant for the organization's operational strength amid increasing regulatory complexity and market expansion.
Prior to joining SEBI, Murty served as Additional Controller General of Defence Accounts in the Ministry of Defence, where he was involved in overseeing financial systems linked to defence operations. He holds a Master's degree in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics and brings over three decades of experience spanning national security, financial advisory, and corporate law administration. His previous roles include Principal Integrated Financial Adviser to the Indian Air Force, Financial Adviser to DRDO, and Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. Murty is a retired officer of the Indian Defence Accounts Service (IDAS-1991 batch).
During his tenure at the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Murty played a central role in shaping corporate law frameworks and advancing e-governance initiatives. He led efforts to decriminalise certain provisions under corporate law, a reform that later informed the government's broader Jan Vishwas legislative push aimed at improving ease of doing business and reducing compliance burdens. Murty has also served as a government nominee on the boards of SEBI and the National Financial Reporting Authority, as well as on the councils of ICAI, ICSI and ICMAI. Notably, he was awarded the Raksha Mantri Award for Excellence in 2024 for his contributions to improving operational readiness within the Indian Air Force's financial systems.
Murty joins the existing SEBI board members including Amarjeet Singh, Kamlesh Chandra Varshney, and Sandip Pradhan. Varshney and Pradhan are from the IRS (Income Tax) cadre, bringing diverse expertise to the regulatory body. Murty is not new to SEBI's institutional ecosystem, having previously served as a part-time member on the board as a government nominee, providing familiarity with the regulator's policy environment and operational framework. This development ensures SEBI has full operational strength in its leadership structure, providing stability and continuity in regulatory oversight of India's capital markets.
