AgentCore Gateway sits between the agent and every external tool, automatically translating REST APIs into MCP-compatible tools with no custom integration code required. The security architecture uses Cedar, an open-source policy language developed by AWS, which governs authorization through mathematically verifiable policies rather than simple trust-based systems. When an AI bot or agent requests a protected resource like an article, a data feed, or a licensed archive, AWS WAF returns a machine-readable HTTP 402 Payment Required response using the x402 open protocol for machine-to-machine payments. The response contains your prices to access the content, accepted payment methods, and license terms. AI traffic monetization is available to AWS WAF customers at no additional charge, with integration provided by Coinbase's x402 Facilitator, and Stripe support coming soon.
The launch extends a buildout that has moved quickly over the past several months, with previous developments including Stripe's x402 integration for billing AI agents in USDC in February, the protocol's v2 multi-chain upgrade in December, and the launch of Agentic.Market in April.
