EPF subscribers can retrieve their forgotten Universal Account Number (UAN) using the official EPFO portal with a step-by-step process. According to the guide from Mint, users must visit https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/ and click on 'Know Your UAN', click 'Get Started' and enter registered mobile number, choose one identity proof (Aadhaar, Member ID, or PAN) and enter corresponding number, complete CAPTCHA verification and click 'Send OTP & Verify', enter the OTP received on mobile number, and after successful verification, their UAN will be displayed on screen. If the screen displays 'UAN Retrieved Successfully', the process is complete, though multiple UANs may indicate a duplicate that requires resolution. The portal now allows direct UAN activation using Aadhaar for members who haven't activated their UAN yet. For subscribers with multiple accounts, EPFO offers two approaches: email uanepf@epfindia.gov.in with both UANs or request transfer through employer to resolve duplicate account issues. Members without internet access can use EPFO's SMS service by typing EPFOHO UAN to 7738299899 or give a missed call to 011-22901406 for offline assistance.
For individuals who only have access to an older PF number, the UMANG mobile application provides an equally simple recovery path through the EPFO module. According to Mint, users must launch the UMANG App, navigate to Employee Centric Services, select the 'Know Your UAN' option, supply registered mobile contact, solve captcha, validate using OTP, choose Member ID as identifier, input old PF Member ID, full legal name precisely as recorded by EPFO, and date of birth. The system will then display the UAN immediately and transmit it via SMS. Both portal and application retrieval pathways rely heavily on two-factor OTP verification, making it crucial to keep mobile contact details up to date with the EPFO for uninterrupted account access.
EPF subscribers with multiple accounts can consolidate their funds using the 'One Member-One EPF Account (Transfer Request)' feature on the EPFO portal. As reported by Mint, the process involves visiting the EPFO portal, navigating to online services, clicking the transfer request option, selecting the establishment, filling UAN details, and submitting OTP verification. The system automatically tracks transfer status through the 'Track Claim Status' option in Online Services. Alternatively, members can email uanepf@epfindia.gov.in with both UANs or request transfer through their employer to resolve duplicate account issues. The EPFO system will identify duplicates during routine checks, deactivate old UANs, and link them to active accounts automatically.
EPFO members can now update their Aadhaar, PAN and bank account details online through the EPFO Member e-Sewa portal with a streamlined process. To complete KYC verification, members must enter their mobile number linked with Aadhaar, account number and IFSC code for bank details, PAN number and name exactly as printed on the card, and Aadhaar number with verification. The verification process involves bank account details verification by concerned banks, employer digital approval using Digital Signature Certificate (DSC), and generally takes 7-10 working days. Members can check KYC status by logging into the EPFO portal and navigating to Manage > KYC to monitor progress and receive updates via SMS.
For FY26, the Centre ratified the EPFO's suggestion of 8.25% interest rate for both EPF and VPF, marking the third consecutive time the instrument delivered 8.25% returns on provident fund. According to Mint, annual employee contributions up to ₹1.5 lakh are exempt under Section 80C of the old tax regime, while employers' contribution of up to 12% (below ₹7.5 lakh) is exempt under both old and new tax regimes. Interest on employees' accumulated contribution is tax-free up to ₹2.5 lakh, while interest on employer's contribution is tax-free. EPFO subscribers must maintain 25% minimum balance in their EPF account at all times, allowing them to access a maximum of 75% of their corpus during partial withdrawal. For example, a subscriber with ₹2 lakh total balance can withdraw up to ₹1.5 lakh while maintaining ₹50,000 minimum balance.
