The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has successfully completed its major database consolidation and software upgrade, with member and employer services now restored on July 3, 2026, following an extended maintenance period that began on June 26, 2026. According to the latest official notice, EPFO has successfully completed a major database consolidation and software upgrade to enhance service delivery and member experience. The organisation had initially announced a three-day maintenance window from June 26 to June 28, subsequently extended till June 30, and then further extended to July 1, 2026 before the latest extension to July 2, 2026 and then to July 3, 2026. The website had shown the "Scheduled System Migration & Temporary Service Unavailability" message, indicating that the portal remained inaccessible even after the announced restoration time had passed, extending the disruption to nearly seven days beyond the originally scheduled timeline. The latest notification expresses gratitude for subscriber patience as they implement this important upgrade.
As reported by EPFO, UAN activation and new UAN generation have been moved to the UMANG app following the upgrade, with both services now requiring Aadhaar-based Face Authentication (FAT) for completion. Members can no longer access UAN Activation and Direct UAN Allotment on the EPFO portal, instead must use the UMANG app and complete the process through Aadhaar-based Face Authentication (FAT). The UMANG app process involves downloading the app, opening EPFO Services, selecting "UAN Activation" under "UAN Services Through Face Auth," completing Aadhaar Face Authentication, and following on-screen instructions. Similarly, employees who need a new UAN must now use the UMANG app by opening EPFO Services, clicking "UAN Allotment and Activation," completing Aadhaar-based Face Authentication, and following the instructions to generate the UAN. The updated system has also made it easier for users who have forgotten their UAN, with subscribers now able to retrieve it by entering their registered mobile number, uploading required identity or address proof, verifying the OTP sent to their mobile number, and completing the verification process to successfully recover their UAN details.
The upgraded portal now offers a simplified UAN retrieval process for subscribers who have forgotten their UAN details. Subscribers need to enter their registered mobile number, upload required identity or address proof, verify the OTP sent to the registered mobile number, and complete the verification process to retrieve their UAN. Notably, death claim filing remains available on the EPFO portal despite the UAN-related changes, with beneficiaries requiring Aadhaar-linked mobile number, bank account details, death certificate of the member, cancelled cheque or bank passbook, and date of birth proof (where applicable). EPFO has clarified that documents must be uploaded in PDF format, each file should be under 2 MB, and file names must not contain spaces. The organisation has advised members and employers to avoid repeated login attempts or submitting duplicate requests during peak hours, as the upgraded system undergoes stabilisation. Employees who already have an EPF account but were never allotted a UAN can still get one by verifying their registered mobile number, entering the required member details and completing the verification process, with a UAN being generated and linked to their existing EPF account.
Despite the restoration of services, EPFO has warned that members and employers may experience slightly longer processing times for claims and certain online services during the initial post-migration period. In a notice on its portal, the retirement fund body stated: "As part of the post-migration stabilization process, claims and service requests will be processed in a phased and calibrated manner with additional verification and validation checks to ensure the accuracy during the initial period of 2 weeks." The organisation has clarified that claims already submitted before the migration period will be taken up for processing after services resume, though the processing period may be delayed during the stabilisation phase. EPFO has advised members requiring assistance during the outage period to contact the EPFO call centre on 14470.
According to EPFO's official notice, the database consolidation and software upgrade represent the completion of the organisation's efforts to modernise the claims processing system and improve digital service delivery for millions of provident fund subscribers. The technology upgrade is specifically aimed at making its online services faster, safer and more reliable. The migration is designed to address the current system's limitations, which operates through more than 120 decentralised databases with no central visibility, creating procedural delays in member services. The EPFO 3.0 platform is expected to provide centralised visibility and reduce the need for physical visits to regional offices, with the upgraded system expected to offer faster, more reliable and more secure online services once the migration is completed. While most online services are now available, the EPF passbook service continues to remain unavailable at the time of writing.
