The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has launched EPFO 3.0, a comprehensive digital transformation initiative designed to modernize India's provident fund system. According to latest reports, the new system aims to provide faster, simpler services for more than seven crore subscribers across India. Key features include UPI-based withdrawals and a streamlined process that allows members to complete transactions with fewer documents and reduced paperwork requirements. The system focuses on digital efficiency, flexibility, and better retirement fund access through enhanced digital infrastructure and improved user experience. Testing has been completed and the system is expected to be rolled out soon, though no specific date has been announced yet.
The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has maintained the interest rate on EPF deposits at 8.25 percent for the financial year 2025-26. According to reports from Zee News, this decision was taken by the EPFO's Central Board of Trustees (CBT), the apex decision-making body of the organization in March this year. The rate remains unchanged from the previous fiscal year, providing continuity for subscribers. Despite the rate announcement, EPFO subscribers are currently awaiting their FY 2025-26 interest credit, with delays common due to government approval and account reconciliation processes.
The EPFO has introduced significant reforms allowing 100% withdrawals for members under special circumstances without needing to provide reasons. As reported by Mint, this provision is available only under specified circumstances such as lockout/closure of establishment for more than 15 days with employees unemployed without compensation, discharge/dismissal/retrenchment of member challenged in court, closure of establishment for more than 6 months with employees remaining unemployed, and treatment situations. The new rules, effective from October 13, 2025, eliminate the requirement for members to specify reasons for partial withdrawals, addressing previous rejections due to inadequate justification. However, normal situations still permit only 75% withdrawals of EPF balance.
Under the new EPFO 3.0 rules, subscribers will be able to withdraw 50% to 75% of their EPF balance via UPI or UPI-enabled ATMs, depending on applicable conditions. The auto-settlement limit has been increased from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh to allow many EPFO members to access their EPF funds within three days. Members can view the eligible EPF balance available for transfer to Aadhaar-linked bank accounts and use the linked UPI PIN to complete transactions. Once the money is transferred, members can use it for online payments or withdraw cash at ATMs. ATM withdrawal facility applies only to the EPF balance, including contributions made by the employee and the employer towards the provident fund, while EPS pension money remains unaffected.
The new EPFO 3.0 framework introduces a minimum balance protection system to ensure that 25% of the contribution remains locked to safeguard the retirement corpus and long-term financial stability. Under the unemployment scenario, up to 75% of the PF balance can be withdrawn immediately if a member becomes unemployed, with the remaining 25% available after 12 months. The system also includes EPS pension withdrawal rules where withdrawal is now permitted only after 36 months, making benefits more structured and ensuring long-term retirement planning. Members can protect themselves from fraud by not sharing their OTP, UAN password, Aadhaar, PAN or bank details for EPF with anyone else. These changes represent a significant shift toward digital convenience while maintaining financial security for subscribers.
