The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has achieved a significant milestone with 83% of claims now being auto-processed through the latest version of Centralised IT Enabled Services (CITES), a substantial improvement from the 70% processed earlier. According to The Times of India, this technological upgrade has enabled EPFO to process a record 11 lakh claims worth ₹3,000 crore on Tuesday, helping clear a bulk of the backlog as the transition to the new centralised architecture took effect. The remaining 6-7 lakh cases are expected to be cleared by the end of the week, officials confirmed. The new architecture allows service requests to be processed at an all-India level instead of being restricted to specific regional offices, significantly improving processing efficiency and reducing dependence on local offices.
EPFO 3.0 introduces significantly increased auto-settlement limits from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh for eligible advance claims, enabling automatic processing without manual intervention up to the revised limit. The system aims to eliminate the need for physical documentation for most routine claims and reduce dependence on employer attestation. Eligible PF claims are expected to be processed within three days, provided all KYC details are correctly updated and no additional verification is required. The auto-settlement feature complements the existing Service History feature that provides a digital record of an employee's career linked to their UAN, displaying details such as previous and current employers, dates of joining and exit, along with corresponding EPF and EPS membership history. Members can access the Service History feature by logging into the EPFO Unified Member Portal using their UAN and password, completing OTP authentication through their registered mobile number.
The enhanced technology has enabled EPFO to process claims on the same day if filed in the morning, particularly for claims related to partial withdrawals for education or health reasons. As per The Times of India, this represents a significant improvement in service delivery, with the new system allowing subscribers to know the exact amount that they can withdraw from their account through simplified rules and centralised database access. The automated pre-validation system ensures eligibility verification, identifies deficiencies, and flags any attempt to claim more than permissible before withdrawal reaches an EPFO office, reducing claim rejections and improving first-time claim acceptance rates. Members can now monitor EPFO claim status to see the progress of withdrawal requests, with the goal of ensuring timely access to funds and better visibility into benefits built through contributions.
EPFO 3.0 introduces UPI-based PF withdrawals with direct credit to linked bank accounts, marking a significant shift from traditional withdrawal methods. The system also proposes ATM-enabled PF withdrawals that will be introduced gradually as the new system is implemented. These features are designed to provide instant access to eligible funds and eliminate the need for physical documentation for most routine claims. Under EPFO 3.0, subscribers may be able to withdraw 50% to 75% of their EPF balance via UPI or UPI-enabled ATMs, depending on applicable conditions, with subscribers able to see the eligible EPF balance available to transfer into their seeded bank accounts. The withdrawal rules continue to protect retirement savings while allowing partial withdrawals for approved purposes such as purchase or construction of a house, with the prescribed eligibility conditions under the EPF Scheme continuing to apply.
The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has enabled a new digital payment facility by integrating with IndusInd Bank, allowing establishments to make provident fund contributions directly through the EPFO portal using the bank's digital banking platforms. Under the integration, employers and establishments maintaining accounts with IndusInd Bank can select the bank as a payment option on the EPFO portal and complete their monthly PF contribution payments through Corporate Internet Banking and the bank's digital platforms, including Indus Direct and Indie for Business. The move is aimed at making statutory PF payments faster and more convenient by reducing manual steps and providing employers with a secure digital payment route. Employers will no longer need to separately initiate transactions outside the EPFO portal, as the payment process has been integrated into the existing EPFO workflow. The facility will benefit businesses, including small and medium enterprises, by offering a smoother payment experience while helping them meet their mandatory provident fund obligations on time.
