The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) board will meet on July 25 to ratify key provisions under the recently introduced Centralised IT Enabled Services (CITES) project, paving the way for its implementation. According to The Economic Times, the 240th meeting of the Central Board of Trustees (CBT) will consider administrative matters, including ratification of some provisions under CITES. The centralised IT platform is expected to significantly improve services for more than 70 million active EPFO subscribers and over 8 million pensioners. The CBT, chaired by the labour and employment minister, is the EPFO's highest decision-making body, with the official agenda for the meeting yet to be circulated.
EPFO has removed the need for a separate provident fund transfer request when employees with Aadhaar-linked UANs change jobs, marking a significant simplification in PF account management. As per Mint, the automatic transfer facility is expected to benefit employees who switch jobs during their careers and often end up managing multiple EPF accounts. Until now, members had to initiate a separate transfer request even after providing their UAN to the new employer and linking the new PF account with the existing UAN. The change follows the migration of EPFO's member database to its new Centralised IT Enabled Services (CITES) platform, which is intended to make member services faster and more streamlined. The UAN is designed to remain the same throughout an employee's career, irrespective of the number of employers, with EPFO aiming to simplify account management and reduce paperwork by automatically linking successive PF accounts to the same UAN.
The new system introduces automated pre-validation of all PF claims before they reach EPFO offices, with the system automatically identifying any deficiencies, discrepancies or missing information at the initial stage. Members will be informed of such issues in advance and guided on the corrections required, a move aimed at reducing claim rejections and improving first-time claim acceptance. Additionally, interest for FY 2025-26 at 8.25%, estimated at over ₹1.44 lakh crore for around 34 crore member accounts, will be auto-processed and verified before being credited to members' passbooks by July 15. During the post-migration stabilisation period, claims and service requests will be processed in a phased and calibrated manner with additional verification and validation checks to ensure accuracy during the initial period of two weeks.
Under CITES, EPFO has consolidated 13 complex partial withdrawal rules into three categories: Essential Needs, Housing Needs and Special Circumstances, making the withdrawal process easier to understand. Members will now be able to withdraw up to 75% of their total PF balance, significantly higher than previous limits. The system also introduces an online query system for claim processing, where if additional information or clarification is needed, members will be notified online and can respond digitally. At present, employees changing jobs must obtain approvals from both employers and the EPFO office, besides submitting a separate claim to transfer their service history along with their PF balance. With the rollout of CITES, transfer cases will be initiated and settled automatically, eliminating the need for separate applications and reducing processing delays.
The new portal features a unified member dashboard allowing members to view their membership details, provident fund balances, claim status, pensionable service records and benefits availed from a single digital interface. Members can now check withdrawal eligibility before applying and see how much they are eligible to withdraw under different PF withdrawal categories, with the system now providing automatic PF transfer on changing jobs through Aadhaar-linked UAN-based accounts, removing the need to submit separate transfer requests. The system also enables automatic PF transfer on changing jobs through Aadhaar-linked UAN-based accounts, eliminating the need to submit separate transfer applications. Members can now respond online to EPFO queries, reducing the need to visit EPFO offices, while pensioners have more flexibility to approach any PF office for services. The automatic PF transfer facility is one among several changes announced after EPFO's transition to the centralised platform, with the organisation also introducing measures such as faster processing of eligible claims, a centralised payment architecture and the ability for members to access services from any EPFO office.
