The New Social Security Schemes 2026 came into force on June 29th, 2026, marking a structural evolution in India's labor compliance and social security regime. According to the latest regulations, EPF contributions remain at 12% (employee) and 12% (employer) up to the statutory wage ceiling of ₹15,000/month, with contributions above this amount formally categorized as voluntary. The new framework establishes strict 20-day SLA bound claim settlements and consolidates the old 13 withdrawal categories into 3 broad heads: Essential Needs (illness, education, marriage), Housing Needs, and Special Circumstances (calamities). Unexplained delays attract a 12% per annum interest penalty payable to the claimant, directly recovered from the defaulting officer's salary.
According to the latest regulations, online claims filed with the EPFO are usually settled within seven to 10 working days, provided subscribers complete their KYC requirements. Offline claims can take up to 20 days to settle, with users receiving SMS alerts from the retirement fund body when there are any changes in status. If claims are not settled within 20 days, members can raise complaints through the official portal at epfigms.gov.in. For FY26, the Centre ratified the EPFO's suggestion of 8.25% interest rate for both EPF and VPF, with interest credits completed on 15 July - marking the third consecutive time the instrument delivered 8.25% returns on provident fund.
Your Member ID in EPF is a unique identifier assigned by the EPFO for each job you hold, helping track contributions under a specific employer. While the Member ID is job-specific, your UAN (Universal Account Number) remains the same throughout your career, linking all Member IDs under one umbrella. Most employers mention the EPF number on your salary slip, and you can find your Member ID through the EPFO UAN Portal by checking 'Service History' or using the EPF Passbook Portal with your UAN credentials. Keep a record of all Member IDs from previous employers and always link new Member IDs to your existing UAN to maintain proper tracking of contributions for each employer.
When the status is 'Under Process', this indicates that the EPFO is verifying the claim and subscribers must wait for 7-10 working days for completion. 'Payment Under Process' means funds transfer has been initiated and approved, with updates expected in 2-3 working days. 'Settled Amount' indicates the amount has been credited to the bank account, while 'Rejected' status requires subscribers to check for mismatches or missing information and make corrections before resubmitting. 'Pending at Field Office' means the regional office is awaiting verification, requiring direct contact with the EPFO office, and 'Not Available' means no claim exists in the system, requiring UAN verification and status recheck after 24 hours.
