According to Business Standard and The Hindu BusinessLine, BSE and eight other mid-cap stocks are likely to move into the large-cap basket in AMFI's upcoming half-yearly reclassification. This brings the total number of large-cap entrants to nine stocks following the Vedanta demerger, with the potential large-cap entrants including BSE, Vodafone Idea, Hitachi Energy India, Jindal Steel, Indian Bank, Indus Towers, Billionbrains Garage Ventures (Groww), Bharat Heavy Electricals and Vedanta Aluminium. The brokerage estimates the large-cap cut-off at approximately ₹1.07 trillion, up from ₹1.05 trillion in December 2025, while the mid-cap cut-off has been pegged at around ₹328 billion, down from ₹348 billion in December 2025. The official AMFI list is expected in the first week of July and will take effect from August 1, 2026, with the fresh list valid from August 2026 to January 2027.
The Vedanta demerger, whose newly listed entities were admitted to trading on June 15, 2026, creates significant movement across market categories. As reported by Nuvama, Vedanta Aluminium with an estimated market capitalisation of ₹1.84 lakh crore is likely to qualify directly as a large-cap stock, while Vedanta Power at ₹16,091 crore, Vedanta Oil & Gas at ₹13,765 crore, and Vedanta Iron & Steel at ₹8,646 crore are expected to fall in the small-cap category. This split adds fresh names to the AMFI universe in the middle of an already active categorisation cycle, with all eyes on the four newly listed stocks as they enter the market framework.
According to Nuvama's analysis, nine stocks could move from large-cap to mid-cap status in the H2 CY26 review. The potential downgrades include Lodha Developers, Indian Hotels Co., Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, Max Healthcare Institute, LG Electronics India, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, Siemens Energy India, Bosch and Hero MotoCorp. Among the most closely watched names are Lodha Developers and Indian Hotels Company, both of which are at risk of slipping into the mid-cap category if current market-cap trends persist. These shifts matter because AMFI's classification list is widely tracked by domestic mutual funds when they assess stock positions within category mandates, though categorisation changes do not automatically trigger fresh inflows or outflows.
According to The Hindu BusinessLine, the divergence in large-cap and mid-cap thresholds was largely due to skewed market movement, with quality stocks finding favour after recent valuation falls. Sriram BKR, Senior Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, noted that while cut-off market caps have moved differently, it would be interesting to see how average and median market caps have performed during this period. He added that the mid-cap index recorded its fresh all-time high in June, highlighting the segment's resilience. Market cap index ratios to the broader market (Nifty-500) as of May show large-caps at a discount of 5.4%, mid-caps at a premium of 16%, and small-caps at a premium of 8% compared to their five-year averages.
Six stocks are expected to move from small-cap to mid-cap classification in the upcoming review. As reported by Nuvama, these include Hindustan Copper, NLC India, AIA Engineering, Ajanta Pharma, Aster DM Healthcare and Sona BLW Precision Forgings. A move into the mid-cap basket does not automatically translate into incremental fund flows, but it does alter how active managers look at these companies across category-specific schemes, making the list relevant for fund managers and market participants tracking potential changes in ownership patterns and benchmark positioning. Additionally, Kaynes Technology India, SJVN, Cholamandalam Fin Holdings, Physicswallah, Global Health and Crisil are expected to be downgraded from mid-cap to small-cap.
According to Nuvama's comprehensive analysis, 23 companies are likely to enter the AMFI small-cap universe as fresh entrants. These include Bharat Coking Coal, Fractal Analytics, CMPDI, Clean Max Enviro, Shadowfax Tech, Amagi Media Labs, Sedemac Mechatronics, Powerica, Kwality Wall's, Omnitech Engineering, OnEMI Technology Solutions, Aye Finance, Sai Parenteral, GSP Crop Science, Amir Chand Jag. Exports, PNGS Reva Diamond Jewellery, Rajputana Stainless, Innovision, Gaudium IVF & Women, Om Power Transmission, Shree Ram Twistex, CMR Green Tech and Hexagon Nutrition. This represents one of the broadest parts of the report, capturing both newly listed companies and names that have now reached the market-cap threshold to be tracked in the AMFI small-cap universe.
