The MSME Sustainable Zero Defect Zero Effect certification scheme has registered nearly 9.5 lakh MSMEs and women-owned enterprises, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises. Among these registered enterprises, 6.67 lakh were awarded Bronze certifications, 6,700 Silver certifications, and 4,800 Gold certifications. The initiative has provided over ₹913 crore in financial support to help enterprises adopt quality and sustainable manufacturing practices, as of July 2026. This certification framework provides MSMEs with a structured pathway for assessment, improvement, incentives and technology upgradation, enabling enterprises to progressively achieve higher standards of quality and sustainability.
The ministry highlighted that women-owned MSMEs are eligible for a 100 per cent subsidy on ZED certification, removing the cost barrier and encouraging greater participation of women entrepreneurs. This subsidy policy, which came into effect from November 11, 2023, makes the certification cost effectively zero for eligible women-owned MSMEs. The provision aims to reduce financial barriers that might otherwise prevent women-led enterprises from pursuing quality certification and sustainable manufacturing practices, supporting them to assess and strengthen their manufacturing systems against recognised parameters of quality, productivity, safety and environmental sustainability. For many first-generation entrepreneurs, particularly those running manufacturing businesses, certification can become an important business credential when competing for larger contracts or entering new markets.
The impact of ZED extends beyond certification as 22 states or UTs have integrated ZED into their industrial policies and are offering additional incentives to certified MSMEs. 19 financial institutions are extending benefits such as concessions in processing fees and interest rates, making it easier for ZED-certified enterprises to access finance. Eligible MSMEs can also avail financial assistance of up to 75 per cent of the cost of testing or system or product certification (maximum ₹50,000), up to ₹2 lakh for handholding and consultancy support, and up to ₹3 lakh for adopting Zero Effect solutions, pollution-control measures and cleaner technologies. The scheme encourages MSMEs to manufacture high-quality products while minimizing their environmental impact and supports enterprises in continuously improving their technology, systems and manufacturing practices.
Several MSMEs have demonstrated significant improvements after adopting ZED practices. Concept Clothing Pvt. Ltd., based in Jalandhar, Punjab, achieved ZED Silver Certification on June 14, 2025, and reported an 80% reduction in workplace incidents, 50% reduction in Mean Time to Repair (MTTR), 7.4% reduction in rework and 4% reduction in rejection. Finex Industries Pvt. Ltd., based in Dindori, Nashik (Maharashtra), achieved ZED Silver Certification on July 14, 2025, and reduced Cost of Poor Quality by 11%, rework by 10%, and defects by 1%. These enterprises have demonstrated how Zero Defect, Zero Effect practices can drive sustainable and competitive growth for MSMEs, strengthening operational discipline, improving process efficiency and enhancing overall competitiveness.
The ZED scheme helps MSMEs strengthen their competitiveness, enhance market credibility and integrate more effectively into domestic and global value chains by promoting quality manufacturing, resource efficiency and environmental sustainability. The initiative supports MSMEs in improving production processes, adopting better quality standards and reducing their environmental footprint, thereby strengthening their competitiveness in domestic and global markets. Rather than functioning as a one-time compliance exercise, the programme provides a structured framework that allows businesses to continuously improve through Bronze, Silver and Gold certification levels. For MSMEs seeking to become suppliers to large manufacturers or expand into export markets, those improvements increasingly influence business opportunities as much as pricing. The value of ZED increasingly extends beyond the certificate itself, helping Indian manufacturers build the capabilities that modern markets increasingly demand, with the programme reflecting India's evolving manufacturing strategy from cost competitiveness to quality and sustainability excellence.
