ICICI Lombard shares tumbled 15% to an intraday low of ₹1,544 on Thursday following the company's Q1 FY2027 results announcement. The sharp decline reflects investor concerns over the insurer's 46% year-on-year decline in net profit to ₹403 crore, which fell from ₹747 crore in the same quarter last year. According to exchange filings, the profit after tax was significantly impacted by two large fire insurance losses amounting to ₹63 crore and a ₹165 crore provision related to a Supreme Court judgment on motor third-party compensation for homemakers' domestic work. Excluding these exceptional items, adjusted PAT stood at ₹575 crore, down 23% year-over-year. However, the market's positive reaction to the results, with the stock rising 1.48% despite the significant profit decline, suggests investors distinguished between temporary challenges and underlying business momentum. In the past one year, the stock has slumped 18%, while in the last three months, it dropped 14%.
ICICI Lombard reported gross direct premium income of ₹8,318 crore for Q1 2027, representing 7.5% growth year-over-year on a 1/n accounting basis. On an n-basis, GDPI reached ₹8,739 crore, up 8.5%. The company outpaced industry growth of 10.9% on a 1/n basis, maintaining its market leadership position. However, profit after tax fell 46% to ₹403 crore, primarily due to two large fire insurance losses and the Supreme Court judgment impact. The combined ratio worsened to 107.2% in Q1 2027 compared to 102.9% in Q1 2026, reflecting deteriorating underwriting performance. Capital gains (net of impairment on investment assets) stood at ₹183 crore in Q1 FY2027 compared to ₹380 crore in Q1 FY2026. The adjusted combined ratio, excluding large losses and court judgment impact, was 102.3%, demonstrating relative stability in core underwriting performance. Profit before tax (PBT) tumbled 46.1% to ₹536 crore in Q1 FY2027 compared to ₹994 crore in Q1 FY2026.
In the motor segment, growth stood at 14.0% for Q1 2027 against industry growth of 13.9%, primarily led by new sales coming from growth in non-OEM channels, specifically in commercial vehicles which led growth with a 34.0% increase in GDPI, followed by two-wheelers at 21.4%. The new sales on a unit basis stood at 33.6% for the company compared to industry growth of 14.9%. The company maintained its industry-leading position with 10.5% market share in Q1 2027. However, the commercial segment dropped 13.8%, primarily led by heightened competitive intensity and significant pricing pressure experienced in the fire insurance business, which impacted premium growth across the portfolio. The retail health segment delivered robust growth of 69.5% for Q1 2027 against industry growth of 31.6%. Individual (retail) health insurance surged 61.4%, with the broader retail health category growing 69.5%. Higher sum assured (≥₹10 lakh) mix increased to 96.4% for fresh health business from 84.5% in Q1 2026, with the group health segment recording 16.3% growth and maintaining a 10.3% market share.

Claims payment performance remained strong, with 97.3% of motor own damage claims and 99.0% of overall health claims paid within 30 days. Cashless Net Promoter Scores stood at 82 for health and 69 for motor in Q4 2026. The company operates through 341 branches, 814 brokers, 163,057 individual agents, and 339 corporate agents, supported by 15,377 employees. The company's comprehensive risk management framework spans underwriting, value-added services, reinsurance, reserving, and investments, with a Risk Committee framework for decisions with solvency impact exceeding 15 basis points and conservative reserving philosophy including explicit Margins for Adverse Deviation above Best Estimate of Liabilities.
HDFC Securities noted that ICICI Lombard continues to enjoy leadership in key segments despite some market share erosion. The brokerage believes the insurer's strong franchise and underwriting discipline support its long-term growth outlook. Following the Supreme Court judgment on motor third-party compensation, the company anticipates that industry-wide motor TP pricing will need to increase by a minimum of 12% to 15% to offset the impact. Health insurance growth is expected to remain strong, with management projecting that retail health will continue to contribute more than 50% of new business over time. The solvency ratio improved to 2.71 times at June 30, 2026, from 2.67 times at March 31, 2026, remaining well above the regulatory minimum of 1.5 times. Book value per share increased to ₹340.46 from ₹337.94 at the end of the previous quarter. In its 25th year, ICICI Lombard outlined five strategic pillars designed to maintain market leadership and deliver steady returns on equity, emphasizing profitable growth over volume, comprehensive product innovation across multiple distribution channels, prudent risk management with adequate reinsurance, technology-driven customer service optimization, and active capital management with conservative reserving practices.
