India's automobile sector has begun FY27 on a robust footing, with strong momentum across key segments recording impressive year-on-year growth of over 25%. According to reports from ET Now, the two-wheeler, three-wheeler, and passenger vehicle categories have emerged as clear leaders, each demonstrating remarkable performance. This broad-based expansion has been driven by rising demand for SUVs, increasing EV adoption, improving rural sentiment, and sustained infrastructure and logistics activity. Exports have also contributed positively to the sector's growth trajectory.
As reported by ET Now, the performance across different automotive segments shows clear leadership patterns. Two-wheelers led with 38% growth, followed by three-wheelers at 31% and passenger vehicles at 26%. Tractors registered 21.5% growth, while commercial vehicle segments showed more moderate but positive trends. Medium and heavy commercial vehicles (MHCVs) grew 15%, and light commercial vehicles (LCVs) recorded 9.5% growth. The data indicates that while all segments are growing, the two-wheeler and passenger vehicle categories are significantly outperforming other segments.
According to ET Now reports, individual company performance reflects the broader sector strength. Hero MotoCorp led two-wheeler growth at 85.4% with 5.66 lakh units sold in April 2026. Maruti Suzuki posted 33.9% growth in passenger vehicles with 2.36 lakh units sold, while Tata Motors achieved 31.1% growth in the same segment. In commercial vehicles, Tata Motors led MHCV growth at 21.8%, and Mahindra & Mahindra showed 20.9% growth in tractor sales. The data demonstrates that while passenger vehicles and two-wheelers are outperforming, commercial vehicle segments are showing mixed but positive trends.
As reported by ET Now, the sector faces some near-term challenges despite strong current performance. Geopolitical uncertainty leading to fuel cost volatility and rising input costs could pose challenges for the automotive sector. However, the broad-based growth across multiple segments and strong demand trends suggest resilience in the market. The performance data indicates that SUVs, EVs, and rural demand are driving growth, while tractors, MHCVs, and LCVs are showing more moderate but positive trends. This diversified growth pattern across segments provides stability to the overall sector outlook.
