Saudi Arabia is considering a massive investment in Pakistan's maritime sector, with the kingdom exploring the establishment of a cryptocurrency and blockchain zone in Karachi as part of a broader investment initiative. According to The Express Tribune, this proposal is among several projects being discussed during an ongoing visit by a Saudi delegation to Pakistan. The investment could reshape Pakistan's commercial and maritime landscape through comprehensive development of a 140-acre maritime business district on Karachi's waterfront, featuring cutting-edge technology integration and modern infrastructure. Minister of Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry emphasized that this strategic collaboration represents a transformative opportunity to unlock the full potential of Karachi Port's waterfront assets and position Pakistan as a regional hub for maritime commerce and investment.
Pakistan has signed a memorandum of understanding with Saudi Arabia for developing 140 acres of prime land into a maritime business district on the Karachi Port Trust waterfront. The MOU was signed between Karachi Port Trust, the Saudi Business Council–Najd Gateway Holding Company, Arif Habib Dolmen REIT Management Limited (AHDRML), and Pakistan Corporate Consortium on Saturday. Minister of Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced the development to the media on Sunday, confirming that the partnership will help expand Pakistan's national shipping fleet by 50%. The KPT has designated this 140 acres of prime land on MT Khan Road for the business district, which will transform the area into a major regional centre for business, trade and maritime activities. As per The Express Tribune, members of the Saudi delegation showed keen interest in broader cooperation in the maritime sector, including potential involvement in port infrastructure and related projects.
As part of the proposed financial and technology cooperation, Pakistan has suggested the creation of a cryptocurrency and blockchain zone, a digital banking park, and an Islamic finance centre as key components of the maritime business district. According to The Express Tribune, Pakistan is actively pursuing the regularization of cryptocurrency trading and sees the proposed crypto zone as a key component of its broader digital economy strategy. The partnership also includes plans for a marine technology and logistics zone, smart port integration facilities, digital customs and shipping services, and research and development initiatives focused on maritime software solutions. Banking units and financial technology infrastructure are also expected to be included in the project, supporting Pakistan's digital transformation goals. Minister Chaudhry stressed that all regulatory and legal requirements under Pakistani laws would be met before pressing ahead with the project.
The proposed development extends beyond maritime infrastructure to include comprehensive urban development projects. In the healthcare and education sectors, Pakistan has proposed the establishment of international-standard hospitals, a medical university, and a maritime and trade law school. The master plan further envisions luxury hotels, high-rise commercial towers, a convention centre, and corporate headquarters. This comprehensive approach aims to create a self-sustaining business ecosystem that supports the maritime operations while providing integrated services for visitors and residents of the district. Minister Chaudhry stated that the development work would target modern commercial infrastructure aimed at attracting investment, generating employment and supporting urban development.
