The government has extended the deadline for filing appeals before GST Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) to July 31, 2026, as reported by the Ministry of Finance. According to the notification issued on Tuesday, the extension applies specifically to appeals filed under Section 112(1) read with Section 112(3) of the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Act. Earlier, through a notification issued on September 17, 2025, the government had notified June 30, 2026 as the original last date for filing of appeals before GSTAT. The Centre announced this extension to provide taxpayers additional time to submit pending cases as the newly operational appellate mechanism stabilises. The revised deadline replaces the earlier cut-off of June 30, 2026, which had been notified well in advance in September 2025, but filing activity intensified sharply in recent weeks. As per the government statement, "The Government has extended the due date in view of the recent representations from various stakeholders, highlighting technical difficulties due to rush to file appeals on the GSTAT portal."
The extension comes after significant technical difficulties emerged on the GSTAT portal, with nearly 30,000 appeals filed during the last 15 days alone, as reported by the Ministry of Finance. Daily filing volumes peaked at around 5,500 appeals, creating heavy traffic that prompted the government to extend the deadline by one month. According to Parag Mehta, Partner, Indirect Tax, N A Shah Associates LLP, "Considering the quantum of appeals that could have been filed till yesterday, an extension was the need of the hour. The trade was facing several issues, including portal glitches, Aadhaar authentication problems, and payments not being reflected." The decision comes amid representations from industry and tax professionals over technical and procedural challenges in filing appeals on the GSTAT portal. As Mehta noted, "Various industry associations had made representations, and writ petitions had also been filed before courts on the matter."
The government has already notified 31 state benches of GSTAT and one Principal Bench located at Delhi, as reported by the Ministry of Finance. Over 4.80 lakh cases are pending before the appellate authority and all these cases are expected to be filed before GSTAT. The GSTAT was launched in September last year, and the government had then notified June 30, 2026, as the last date for filing of appeals before GSTAT. The government had in May 2024 appointed Justice (Retired) Sanjaya Kumar Mishra as the President of the Principal Bench of GSTAT. Since the rollout of GST on July 1, 2017, all disputes between a taxpayer and GST department used to go to High Courts or Supreme Court, thus delaying dispute resolution. With the operationalisation of GSTAT in September 2025, the disputes resolution is expected to be faster.
Tax experts welcomed the move, saying it would help ensure that taxpayers are not deprived of their statutory right to appeal because of procedural or technological bottlenecks. "A one-month extension for filing appeals before the GSTAT is a welcome and much-needed relief. It will provide taxpayers and professionals adequate time to adapt to the newly operational Tribunal, ensure that genuine appeals are not lost on limitation, and support a smooth transition to the GSTAT framework," said Abhishek Jain, Partner and Head, Indirect Tax, KPMG in India. AMRG Global Managing Partner Rajat Mohan said the government's decision is a "pragmatic move that protects taxpayers' right to appeal while providing certainty during the transition to a fully operational GSTAT." The Ministry has advised taxpayers to file appeals well before the revised July 31 deadline to avoid last-minute rush and ensure proper processing of their applications. This advisory aims to prevent the technical difficulties that occurred during the initial filing period and ensure smooth functioning of the GSTAT portal for all stakeholders.
The extension provides taxpayers with adequate time to adapt to the newly operational Tribunal and ensure that genuine appeals are not lost on limitation. The decision comes amid robust growth in the government's tax collections during the current financial year, with gross GST collections rising 3.2% year-on-year to ₹1.94 lakh crore in May and net direct tax collections increasing 14.64% to ₹5.21 lakh crore during April 1-June 17 period of FY27. The GST Appellate Tribunal serves as the first judicial appellate forum for taxpayers seeking to challenge orders issued by GST authorities after the disposal of their first appeals. The government has urged taxpayers to avoid last-minute filing to prevent technical issues and ensure smooth processing of their applications.
