Indian stock markets will observe a shortened trading week due to the Bakri Id holiday on Thursday, May 28, marking the ninth market holiday of 2026. According to The Economic Times, this follows the suspension on May 1 for Maharashtra Day and represents a significant market disruption as investors prepare for the extended weekend. The closure will affect all trading segments including equity, equity derivatives, and securities lending and borrowing (SLB) segments across both NSE and BSE. This marks the ninth market holiday of 2026, with seven more scheduled before year-end. The Government of India's Personnel Ministry specifically notified May 28, 2026 as the central government holiday for Bakrid for Delhi offices, confirming the closure across the National Capital Region.
The Multi-Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) will follow a split trading schedule during the holiday period. As reported by The Economic Times, MCX remained closed during the regular trading hours of 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, but will resume trading in the evening session from 5:00 PM continuing until 11:30 PM/11:55 PM, depending on the contract specifications. This modified schedule allows MCX to maintain some trading activity despite the broader market closure. However, MCX's morning trading session on May 28 will be closed, with gold, silver, crude oil, natural gas and agricultural commodity futures unavailable for trading. The evening session status should be verified on the official MCX website or with commodity brokers before market close on May 27. Meanwhile, the National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange Limited will remain shut for both trading sessions on the same day.
According to ET Now reports, the BSE Sensex was trading with volatility, swinging between gains and losses and was up around 150 points, while the NIFTY 50 traded above 23,950 ahead of the holiday. Key stock movements included HDFC Bank declining around 2% and Eternal gaining over 1%. With markets shut on Thursday, investors will now focus on global cues and commodity prices before trading resumes on Friday.
The weekly NIFTY options expiry scheduled for May 28 has been shifted to Wednesday, May 27 due to the holiday closure. Traders with short weekly options positions must square off or let them expire today, as there is no Thursday session tomorrow. Equity delivery trades operate on a T+1 settlement cycle, meaning any buy trades executed today will settle on Friday, May 29, 2026 - the next trading day after the stock market holidays 2026 closure. IPO-related activity, including Q-Line Biotech, Autofurnish and Bio Medica Laboratories listings scheduled for May 29, will proceed as planned since the listing is on Friday. Harikanta Overseas and Yaashvi Jewellers close today (May 27) with their allotment activity on May 29 not impacted by the holiday.
Including tomorrow's Bakri Id closure, there are 7 remaining scheduled market holidays 2026, bringing the total stock market holidays 2026 count for the full year to 16 weekday closures. This brings the total to 16 weekday stock market holidays 2026 when counting Muhurat Trading as a special session rather than a full closure. The complete list includes Muharram on June 26, Ganesh Chaturthi on September 14, Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, Dussehra on October 20, Diwali Balipratipada on November 10, Guru Nanak Jayanti on November 24, and Christmas on December 25. Four key holidays fall on weekends and therefore will not lead to additional market closures, including Mahashivratri on February 15, Eid-Ul-Fitr on March 21 (both already passed), Independence Day on August 15, and Diwali Laxmi Pujan on November 8 (which will be a special one-hour Muhurat Trading session).
