
Indian equity markets experienced significant selling pressure today, with S&P BSE Sensex declining 832.12 points or 1.10% to 74,413.21 and Nifty 50 dropping 261.20 points or 1.10% to 23,382.30 as of 10:25 IST. According to Business Standard, barring IT index, all sectoral indices on NSE were traded in red with realty, consumer durables and auto shares leading the fall. The broader market weakness was evident with BSE 150 MidCap Index tumbling 1.66% and BSE 250 SmallCap Index dropping 2.57%. Market breadth remained negative with 764 shares rising and 3,102 shares falling on the BSE, while 204 shares remained unchanged.
The consumer durables sector faced severe pressure, with Nifty Consumer Durables index tumbling 3.34% to 34,366.50, marking the third consecutive session of losses and extending the sector's decline to 3.42% over two consecutive trading sessions. As reported by Business Standard, Amber Enterprises India Ltd experienced a sharp decline of 13.68%, significantly worse than its previous fall of 6.89%. Other major constituents also declined substantially, with PG Electroplast down 5.56%, Blue Star falling 3.8%, Kalyan Jewellers India dropping 3.41%, and Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals losing 2.86%. The sector's performance was notably worse than the benchmark SENSEX's 4.7% drop over the same period.
The rupee faced significant pressure, edging lower against the dollar to hover at 96.2300 compared with its previous close of 95.8100, and also touched an all-time intraday low of 96.25 during the session. In the commodities market, Brent crude for July 2026 settlement rose $1.83 cents or 1.67% to $111.09 a barrel. Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) provided some support by buying shares worth ₹1,329.17 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) were net sellers to the tune of ₹1,958.82 crore in the Indian equity market on May 15, 2026, according to provisional data from Business Standard.
Several companies announced their quarterly earnings today, with Gland Pharma surging 12.47% after reporting a 96.62% increase in consolidated net profit to ₹366.7 crore on a 22.31% rise in net sales to ₹1,742.80 crore in Q4 FY26 over Q4 FY25. However, NCC slipped 5.22% after the company reported an 18.8% drop in consolidated net profit to ₹206.02 crore in Q4 FY26, compared to ₹253.82 crore recorded in Q4 FY25. Other companies reporting earnings today include Indian Oil Corporation (down 2.42%), Afcons Infrastructure (down 6.87%), Ola Electric Mobility (down 3.17%), and Sun Pharma Advanced Research Company (down 2.26%).
