According to CryptoQuant data, cryptocurrency exchange trading volume broke out of its bear-market slump in August, with spot activity reaching approximately $75 billion on August 21 and perpetual futures hitting about $336 billion. The analytics firm interprets this rebound as an early marker of a new bull phase, as the spike arrived alongside a price rally rather than a wave of selling. What distinguishes this surge from earlier 2026 volume spikes is its direction - earlier spikes occurred during sell-offs, making them indicators of exit demand rather than fresh buying activity. As per CryptoQuant's latest weekly report published on September 14, this increase in volume stood out because unlike previous spikes, it came alongside rising prices rather than heavy selling. Unlike previous bull market phases, where volume spikes were often accompanied by price declines, this volume surge occurred amid a 24% rally in BTC, indicating that the increased trading activity was primarily driven by buying pressure.
August 21 marked the second-largest spot session since February's peak, with Binance handling $19.4 billion of the total, followed by Coinbase at $8 billion and Gate at $5.1 billion. The growth was particularly broad, with the 30-day change in spot volume peaking around August 25 at the fastest pace of 2026. Gate led with growth of 667%, Coinbase up 429%, and OKX up 213%, while Binance and smaller venues expanded by roughly 157% to 163%. This activity occurred during a 24% rally in Bitcoin and other major coins, which CryptoQuant treats as evidence of genuine buying demand. The pace of this increase was also the fastest this year, as reported in CryptoQuant's September 14 weekly report.
Daily futures volume reached approximately $336 billion on August 21, the highest since March, led by Binance at $124 billion, OKX at $46 billion, and MEXC at $30 billion. However, CryptoQuant noted that most of the futures spike came from traders covering shorts or being liquidated as prices climbed quickly. The futures growth was still market-wide, with Binance up 202% and Bybit up 184%, while OKX, Coinbase, and Gate now show the fastest 30-day expansion at 407%, 378%, and 305% respectively. As per CryptoQuant's latest analysis, this futures volume surge was consistent with the broader market shift from bear to early bull phase. As of August 25, the 30-day growth rates of spot and perpetual futures trading volumes across major exchanges all expanded significantly, signaling a broad recovery in market participation and leverage activity.
A significant development supporting the bullish outlook is the STH (Short-to-Long) ratio reaching profit territory for the first time since the market top. As reported by CryptoQuant, this marks a historically important signal that has previously coincided with the end of bear markets. The last time STH sat in profit territory for a sustained stretch was in January, but that episode didn't result in a sustained bull market. This current STH profitability represents a fundamental shift in market dynamics, as it indicates that short-term traders are now making money from long positions rather than short positions, suggesting a reversal in market sentiment. The combination of volume recovery, STH profitability, and sustained price gains creates a compelling case for the end of the bear market downtrend and the beginning of a new bullish phase across the cryptocurrency market.
