Cryptocurrency spot trading volume demonstrated a strong recovery in August, climbing 19% to $510.4 billion according to WuBlockchain data. This marked the biggest monthly increase of 2026 and represented a significant rebound from July's trough of $429 billion, which was the weakest month of the year. The recovery outpaced derivatives trading, which rose 15.9% to $3.51 trillion after falling below $3.1 trillion in the previous month. Binance led the recovery, posting $243.1 billion in spot volume and $1.67 trillion in futures, with its spot share reaching 47.6%, up from 43.9% in January.
A significant shift occurred in derivatives trading patterns, with crypto perpetual volume jumping to $421 billion in the week ending August 23rd. As reported by AMBCrypto, this represents a substantial increase from the previous levels. TradFi-perps share of trading volumes decreased from 40% to 20%, while weekend TradFi-perps volume jumped from $5 billion in January to $53 billion in August. The weekend volume averaged at 17.1% of weekday levels but reached 40% during major market-moving weekends, indicating growing demand for 24/7 trading opportunities. The futures-to-spot volume ratio reached 7.06x in July, up from 6.21x in June, before easing to 6.87x in August as spot volume grew faster than derivatives.
The cryptocurrency market demonstrated strong momentum in August, with Bitcoin's price gaining about 25%, marking its strongest monthly performance since November 2024. The institutional backing was particularly robust, with US-listed Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) attracting $3.52 billion in net inflows during the month, marking their strongest month this year. Ether products hit a 2026 record with $824 million in weekly inflows, indicating broad-based institutional interest across major cryptocurrencies. The spot recovery was broad, with volume rising at 13 of the 14 exchanges tracked, though Uniswap was the only decliner at 18.7%.
According to the Binance report, equity holders increased their crypto allocations from 64% to 72%, while simultaneously decreasing their allocations to stablecoins by 22%. This suggests that investors are adding cash to crypto as opposed to de-leveraging stablecoins. The Altcoin Season Index remains at 37 and BTC dominance stands at 59.7%, indicating that altcoin rotation is still in question. The data reveals that investors are not rotating out of equities but are buying crypto in addition to their existing equity holdings. Despite the strong monthly performance, spot volume remains 45% below its January level, and the futures-to-spot ratio still sits near its 2026 highs.
The volume recovery came alongside renewed institutional interest, with concentration remaining high as the three largest venues handled 64.8% of spot volume and 74.7% of derivatives volume in August. The Jackson Hole speech later sent September rate hike odds to around 60%, causing BTC to sharply pull back. As noted by AMBCrypto, September presents a critical test for the rally with payrolls, CPI, the CLARITY Act vote, and the FOMC meeting all packed into the first half of the month. The report suggests that with BTC dominance below 60% and rotational leadership in the alt-asset class yet to be determined, the rally faces serious risks from potential institutional demand reversals.
