A 36-year-old Hertfordshire man was kidnapped in a violent incident in east London's Shoreditch neighborhood on July 3, 2025. According to reports from Coinbase, the victim met four strangers at a Shoreditch bar and was later forced home where they coerced him into opening several accounts, including a Coinbase account. The attackers subsequently forced their victim to access his cryptocurrency and bank accounts using facial verification, leading to crypto company Coinbase contacting police to report unusual activity on the account.
Coinbase used its Global Intelligence team to trace stolen funds onchain in real time as the attack unfolded. As reported by Coinbase, when the attackers attempted to move funds off the platform, the exchange's internal systems flagged the customer as under duress. The exchange contacted UK police while the crime was still in progress, then mapped the flow of stolen assets. Investigators traced £1,900 ($2,500) in crypto plus additional fiat across multiple wallets, linking one address to a suspect who held a Coinbase account. The victim awoke the next morning with no memory to discover he had facial injuries and was missing more than £10,000 from his bank and cryptocurrency accounts.
Four defendants were convicted of conspiracy to rob, kidnapping, and false imprisonment at St Albans Crown Court on May 18, 2026. A fifth defendant was convicted of money laundering. The sentences handed out were: Brandon Stephenson, 25, jailed for five and a half years and ordered to pay £300 to the victim; Jason Kareem, 23, jailed for six years and six months including a five-year sentence for this investigation and a consecutive 18-month sentence for breaching other suspended sentences; Jerome Denton, 39, jailed for six years; and Royan Campbell, 20, jailed for three years and six months. Rayshon Keena, 20, received a two-year community order including 150 days of unpaid work and £500 compensation for money laundering offences.
The victim's impact statement revealed severe psychological and emotional trauma from the ordeal. As reported by Coinbase, the victim stated he had trouble sleeping, would wake in the middle of the night with his mind racing and felt strangers had ongoing access to his personal life. He openly avoids certain areas of London and has turned down invitations in personal and work life, describing his demeanor as much more reserved and subdued. His partner, who found him covered in blood the next day, said she was left feeling exposed and vulnerable, and on edge and apprehensive when her partner was out. The victim's partner noted he has pulled back from previously having a very social and outgoing life.
