According to reports from crypto.news, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong announced that the exchange has successfully implemented AI technology to rebuild compliance workflows, achieving a 90% reduction in account restriction resolution times. Armstrong stated that the company rebuilt nearly every workflow and found large efficiency gains in one of their highest-risk business areas. The AI system now handles most repetitive work while employees continue to check every result to protect security and improve AI models.
As reported by crypto.news, Armstrong emphasized that humans still validate every outcome to protect security, improve models, and handle higher-level decisions. This approach ensures that account restrictions, which can affect customer access, fraud controls, and regulatory duties, are not compromised while moving faster. The human oversight maintains the necessary checks that protect users and the company while leveraging AI efficiency. The company now operates more like automated triage, where AI systems process standard fraud and compliance cases first, while human staff step in only when transactions require deeper review or judgment.
The compliance update is part of Coinbase's broader restructuring efforts, which included cutting about 14% of staff as Armstrong moved the company toward smaller teams and faster workflows. Based on the company's reported headcount, that equals roughly 660 to 700 jobs removed. The company is restructuring teams around what it calls "AI-native pods," where smaller groups of employees work alongside automated systems instead of handling every task manually. Employees now focus more on complex decisions while AI handles repetitive reviews and case sorting, directly tied to cost reduction and scale operations.
The compliance update aligns with Coinbase's wider AI payments strategy, where Armstrong believes machine-to-machine payments could create demand for digital dollars with Base and USDC central to their plan. The company claims AI systems now process 55% of US fraud cases internally and is promoting AI-agent payments using USDC on Base, a market the company believes could grow larger than traditional human-driven online commerce. Separate coverage showed that x402 recorded 75.41 million transactions and $24.24 million in volume over 30 days, positioning it as a payment standard for AI agents to pay for APIs, data, cloud tools, and other services.
