Cardano developer Input Output announced Friday that it will begin transferring control of key blockchain components to external specialist teams starting in August, as part of a multi-year decentralization push. According to the announcement, the handover covers Cardano's Haskell node, Plutus smart-contract platform, Daedalus wallet, Hydra scaling technology and developer relations. Independent companies including Se7en Labs and Teragone will assume responsibility for parts of the core infrastructure, while at least three Cardano implementations in Haskell, Rust and Go will be maintained under community oversight and formal specifications.
As reported by Input Output, the move represents the final stage of the Voltaire era focused on full decentralization of node and reference blueprint development. Input Output CEO and Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson stated that this marks the transition from protocol decisions and governance to the community, with the next step being the spread of responsibility for developing and maintaining the software. The plan calls for independent teams to maintain multiple Cardano implementations, with member organizations including Intersect and Pragma overseeing formal specifications and development subject to community review and voting.
Despite Cardano's recent 7% surge on July 21, bringing total monthly gains to approximately 9%, market positioning data reveals a concerning divergence between retail and institutional sentiment. According to latest positioning data, top traders maintain a short position with a ratio of 0.93, meaning more short than long positions, while retail traders hold a heavily long position at 2.08. This 1.15-point divergence between professional and retail sentiment is unusually wide and historically indicates potential for a reversal when retail positions are forced to unwind.
Cardano has unveiled Pogun, a comprehensive Bitcoin DeFi platform targeting the $1.6 trillion in idle Bitcoin sitting in wallets. The platform rolls out in three phases across 2026: a non-margin credit market in the second quarter, a yield-focused application in the third quarter, and a BitVM-based trust-minimized bridge in the fourth quarter. The mechanism that matters for ADA holders is that every transaction in the system requires ADA for fees, paid invisibly by Bitcoin users, creating a demand driver that Cardano's token has lacked. The platform leverages Midnight, Cardano's privacy partner chain, for confidential transactions and Cardano's EUTXO architecture for UTxO compatibility with Bitcoin.
The latest price rally comes as Cardano's network fundamentals remain weak, with total value locked (TVL) dropping to $69 million, down 24% in a month and nearly 90% below its two-year peak. Despite the network's recent Van Rossem hard fork activation on July 18 - its first upgrade approved fully through on-chain governance - network activity has fallen to a 45-day low. The ADA futures market shows open interest of $1.11 billion across 94 perpetual markets, with a positive funding rate of 0.01%, indicating that long positions are paying premiums to hold their positions. This disconnect between price performance and network usage leaves Cardano at a critical crossroads where institutional skepticism may determine the sustainability of the current rally.
