Bitcoin has experienced a dramatic transformation since Warren Buffett's 2018 cryptocurrency criticism, surging around 750% despite the legendary investor's warnings. According to reports from The Economic Times, the digital asset recently gained more than 7% in a month, with fresh investor optimism briefly pushing the currency over $88,000 last week. The first decentralised cryptocurrency has now seen some consolidation and currently trades near the $84,000 mark. The digital asset has since hit record highs above ₹1,26,000, driven by growing institutional and investor interest, before correcting sharply from those peak levels.
Buffett expressed his distaste for Bitcoin during Berkshire Hathaway's 2018 annual shareholder meeting, calling it 'rat poison squared' while speaking to CNBC. As reported by The Economic Times, Charlie Munger, Berkshire's then vice chairman, added that trading in cryptocurrencies is 'just dementia'. In January 2018, Buffett stated he could almost certainly see a bad ending for cryptocurrencies, saying he could buy a five-year put on every cryptocurrency if given the opportunity. 'In terms of cryptocurrencies, generally, I can say with almost certainty that they will come to a bad ending,' he said, adding that he would be glad to buy puts on every cryptocurrency but would never short a dime's worth.
Bitcoin achieved its all-time high of more than ₹1,26,000 in October 2025, driven by peak optimism following US President Donald Trump's comments backing the cryptocurrency. According to The Economic Times, the digital currency has now significantly corrected from those levels. The recent spikes have been attributed to renewed interest in cryptocurrencies, with investors showing fresh optimism despite the longstanding warnings from the market legend. The sharp spikes amid renewed interest in cryptocurrencies demonstrate the continued volatility in the digital asset market.
Despite Buffett's continued bearish stance on cryptocurrencies, the market has shown resilience in Bitcoin's recovery. As reported by The Economic Times, the legendary investor reiterated his bearish view on cryptocurrencies in 2021, avoiding questions on Bitcoin to avoid criticism from long-term holders. The contrast between Buffett's caution and Bitcoin's performance highlights the divergent views on digital assets within the investment community, with investors often remembering why the market legend disliked Bitcoin despite its remarkable recovery.
