Bitcoin has rallied to around $80,000 in August, marking a 30% gain from its October 2025 peak of approximately $124,000, though it remains far below that historic high. The latest surge follows a 21% weekly rally that saw Bitcoin climb to $77,100 and briefly touch $79,000, representing crypto's biggest weekly rally of 2026. According to The Energy Mag, the price recovery comes despite the broader crypto mining industry pivoting away from Bitcoin operations. The current rally was accompanied by significant gains across major cryptocurrencies, with Ethereum jumping 28% to $2,442, XRP surging 46%, Solana gaining 24%, and Dogecoin popping 30%.
Major Bitcoin mining companies are systematically abandoning cryptocurrency operations in favor of artificial intelligence infrastructure, with TerraWulf, Ionic Digital, Core Scientific, Iris Energy, Bitdeer, Riot Platforms and Hut 8 leading the pivot. Riot Platforms signed a $9 billion, 20-year compute deal with Anthropic earlier this month, while companies are actively refitting their mining facilities for AI operations. As Wolfie Zhao from The Energy Mag predicts, "We expect to see many public miners continue winding down their Bitcoin mining hardware in the coming quarters." The shift represents a fundamental change in the industry, with companies like Enegix planning to transform "a significant portion of the business to AI" and changing their websites to reflect the strategic pivot.
Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs pulled in $2.6 billion last week, representing the strongest inflow week since October 2025 and tripling the previous week's trading volume. BlackRock's IBIT — the largest spot Bitcoin ETF — alone absorbed $503 million on Thursday, while Ethereum ETFs saw $697 million in net inflows with volume surging 259%. These institutional flows demonstrate deliberate capital allocation rather than retail FOMO, with the recent acceleration in ETF inflows serving as one of 2026's clearest bullish signals. The pattern shows institutional investors are making systematic bets on crypto's long-term potential despite short-term volatility and the industry's pivot to AI infrastructure.
Solana has emerged as the top performer among major cryptocurrencies, outpacing Bitcoin with a 1.5% gain to around $98 while Bitcoin declined 0.2% to below $79,000 in the last 24 hours. Over the past week, Solana has risen about 27% against Bitcoin's gains of 23%. According to SoSoValue data, U.S. spot Solana ETFs extended their net inflow streak to a fifth session, attracting $33.5 million on Monday, the highest daily figure this year, bringing cumulative net inflows to a record $1.22 billion. Bitwise President Teddy Fusaro reported that its Solana staking ETF (BSOL) saw a traded volume of $108 million on Monday, breaking the previous record for a single day of trading for a Solana ETF. However, Bitcoin ETFs remain significantly larger with cumulative net inflows of more than $54 billion and total net assets of around $98.6 billion.
