
Waaree Energy Storage Solutions, a subsidiary of Waaree Energies, has commenced operations at its 5.15 GWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) container manufacturing facility in Gujarat. The facility's capacity has been upgraded from the originally planned 3.5 GWh following debottlenecking of production throughput and improvements in the energy density of battery cells. According to the company, the facility is equipped with Industry 4.0 technologies, including Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), intelligent material handling systems, automated assembly lines, and advanced testing and quality assurance systems. As per Moneycontrol, the project has been commenced through its subsidiary, Waaree Energy Storage Solutions Pvt Ltd, with the company aiming to have BESS container manufacturing capacity of 20 GWh going forward.
The BESS container facility represents the first milestone in Waaree ESS' 20 GWh manufacturing roadmap by FY 2028. During the current financial year, the company plans to operationalise a 5.15 GWh battery pack manufacturing facility, upgraded from the originally planned 3.5 GWh, and a 3.5 GWh lithium cell manufacturing facility. Designed for utility-scale as well as commercial and industrial applications, the facility will manufacture Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) containers aimed at delivering scalable energy storage solutions. The facilities are expected to strengthen the domestic energy storage ecosystem, support India's clean energy ambitions and reduce dependence on imported technologies. According to the company, Battery Energy Storage Systems are crucial for India's expanding solar and wind power sectors, enabling storage of renewable energy for use during peak demand and enhancing grid stability. As per Moneycontrol, Waaree ESS develops advanced battery technologies and integrated energy storage solutions for utilities, commercial & industrial customers, and infrastructure projects.
In February 2026, Waaree Energies announced plans to set up a 16 GWh integrated lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant in Rambilli, Anakapalli, Andhra Pradesh, with an investment of ₹81.75 billion (~$901.26 million). The integrated greenfield lithium-ion manufacturing plant covers the entire battery value chain. In January 2026, Waaree Energy Storage Solutions secured ₹10.03 billion (~$111.16 million) in funding from strategic investors to develop a 20 GWh cell-and-battery-pack manufacturing facility. In March 2026, the company broke ground on a 10 GW integrated solar ingot-and-wafer manufacturing facility in Nagpur, Maharashtra, with an investment of approximately ₹62 billion (~$671.60 million).
According to Moneycontrol, the company's Director Sunil Rathi emphasized that "As India accelerates its clean energy transition, reliable and domestically manufactured energy storage will be essential for ensuring grid stability, energy security and sustainable growth." The facility's upgraded capacity from 3.5 GWh to 5.15 GWh demonstrates the company's commitment to meeting India's growing energy storage demands. With planned capacities of 3.5 GWh lithium cells and 5.15 GWh battery packs, Waaree ESS is positioned to deliver Made-in-India energy storage solutions that are crucial for India's expanding solar and wind power sectors. The facility's focus on utility-scale applications positions it well to support India's clean energy transition and reduce dependence on imported technologies. As per Moneycontrol, the company believes this marks a major milestone in building India's integrated energy storage manufacturing ecosystem.
