Leading cement maker UltraTech has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Indian company to cross 2 GW of captive green power capacity. According to reports from The Economic Times, the Aditya Birla Group flagship company commissioned a 116.55-MW wind energy project in Barmer, Rajasthan on Monday, pushing its cumulative installed green energy capacity to 2,024 MW. The company has also commissioned 10 MW of Waste Heat Recovery System (WHRS) capacity at Sarlanagar Cement Works, its integrated manufacturing unit in Karnataka. As per The Economic Times, "With this, UltraTech's cumulative installed green energy capacity has reached 2,024 MW, making it the first cement company in India to commission over 2 GW of green energy capacity for captive use."
As reported by The Economic Times, UltraTech's current green energy capacity of 2,024 MW comprises 1,580 MW of renewable energy capacity and 444 MW of WHRS capacity. The company stated that together, these green energy sources meet about 48 per cent of the company's current power requirements. In FY27, nearly a third of UltraTech's 76 manufacturing units in India have maintained green energy utilization above 50 per cent of their electricity requirement, with five units exceeding 95 per cent. The company continues to progressively integrate Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across its operations to enhance renewable energy utilization and supply reliability.
According to The Economic Times, the milestone reflects the cumulative impact of UltraTech's multi-pronged energy transition strategy. The company commissioned 430 MW of green energy capacity in FY26 and continues to advance its portfolio of renewable energy and WHRS projects. In 2025, UltraTech operationalised India's first on-site hybrid round-the-clock renewable energy project at its Sewagram Cement Works in Gujarat, combining solar, wind and battery storage. The company has not invested in new captive thermal power capacity for more than ten years as part of its decarbonisation strategy, whether for greenfield projects or brownfield expansions at its integrated units.
As reported by The Economic Times, UltraTech Cement Ltd is a USD 10 billion building solutions company and the largest cement company globally by sales volume outside China. The company has a total grey cement capacity of 210.1 MTPA and white cement/putty capacity of 3.5 MTPA. The company continues to progressively integrate Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across its operations to enhance renewable energy utilization and supply reliability.
