India's power sector is witnessing significant regulatory changes that could impact renewable energy development. As reported by Reuters, the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) issued an order on July 11 directing renewable energy companies to either surrender transmission rights or provide additional bank guarantees if their projects are not producing electricity. This regulatory push could free up approximately 15.7 gigawatts of grid connectivity currently held by projects that are awarded transmission access but are not generating power. The order permits transfers of transmission rights within corporate groups and will first offer surrendered capacity to existing applicants within the same substation cluster before any remaining capacity goes to auction.
