Tata Motors Ltd. has partnered with Welspun Renewable Energy Pvt. Ltd. to develop an 86 MW wind-solar hybrid project that will supply green power to four of the automaker's manufacturing facilities. According to reports from PTI, the two companies have entered into a landmark Power Purchase Agreement for the project, which will cater exclusively to Tata Motors' plants in Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Karnataka. These facilities manufacture commercial vehicles, making this partnership strategically significant for the company's sustainable operations and operational decarbonisation goals.
Once operational, the hybrid project is expected to generate about 200 million units of renewable electricity annually. As reported by PTI, Tata Motors estimates that this could help avoid more than 1.4 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year. The project will combine wind and solar generation, helping provide a more consistent supply of renewable electricity than a single-source project. The renewable energy will be developed through a co-investment model and backed by the long-term power purchase agreement, with the integrated wind-solar hybrid setup designed to offer better utilisation, improved reliability and more balanced renewable energy supply for large industrial power consumers.
According to PTI, Tata Motors said the project would support its efforts to make manufacturing operations more energy-efficient and reduce the carbon footprint of its commercial vehicle business. Vishal Badshah, vice president of operations at Tata Motors, stated that the scale and integrated nature of this wind-solar hybrid solution will help secure a reliable supply of renewable energy for key commercial vehicle manufacturing facilities while reducing operational carbon emissions on a sustained basis. The project reflects Tata Motors' continued focus on building greener and more energy-efficient manufacturing operations, with the scale and integrated nature of the hybrid solution making it practical for large manufacturing operations and improving predictability in long-term energy sourcing critical for continuous manufacturing operations.
As reported by PTI, this initiative will significantly catalyse Tata Motors' clean energy transition and support its RE100 target by 2030. Welspun Renewable Energy Pvt Ltd MD & CEO Kapil Maheshwari described the partnership with Tata Motors as a defining milestone in Welspun New Energy's journey. Maheshwari emphasized that the partnership represents a model for how India's largest manufacturers can decarbonise and achieve net zero and sustainability goals, noting that the agreement is not merely a Power Purchase Agreement but a model for how large Indian manufacturers can decarbonise and move closer to their net-zero and sustainability goals. The hybrid wind-solar project is intended to increase the share of renewable energy in Tata Motors' manufacturing operations and contribute towards its broader roadmap to achieve net-zero emissions in its manufacturing operations.
