Four major companies have committed significant investments totaling ₹6.5 lakh crore for nuclear energy projects in Maharashtra. According to a Maharashtra government statement, Reliance Industries will invest ₹2 lakh crore to develop 7,200 MW of nuclear capacity, while Adani Power has outlined ₹1.5 lakh crore for 6,000 MW projects. State-run NTPC will invest ₹1 lakh crore in building 7,200 MW capacity, and Lalitpur Power Generation Company, part of the Bajaj Group, will invest ₹2 lakh crore for 5,000 MW capacity. The combined investments will add 25.4 GW of power generation capacity across all projects.
The nuclear energy projects are expected to create approximately 123,000 jobs in Maharashtra. As reported by The Economic Times, these investments represent a significant commitment to the state's energy infrastructure development. The government signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with all four companies on Tuesday for these projects, marking a major milestone in the state's nuclear energy ambitions.
The push for nuclear energy is being driven by rising electricity demand from emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence and data centers, which is expected to exponentially drive power demand in Maharashtra in the coming years. According to The Economic Times, industry leaders globally, including hyperscalers, are increasingly turning to nuclear power for its ability to provide stable, round-the-clock clean energy. The Maharashtra government is also exploring thorium-based nuclear power plants as part of its modernization strategy, with plans for a 1540 MW thorium plant and two 220 MW plants to replace inefficient thermal power plants.
The state government is in advanced talks with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India and the Department of Atomic Energy for the thorium-based nuclear power plant venture. This strategic shift represents Maharashtra's commitment to transitioning from traditional thermal power generation to more efficient and sustainable nuclear energy solutions. The combination of conventional nuclear projects and thorium-based technology will position the state as a major player in India's nuclear energy landscape.
