Mehli K Mistry has officially opted out of re-election as trustee of the Tata Medical Centre Trust, with his current term concluding on September 30, 2026. According to reports from Mint, Mistry confirmed his decision in an email dated September 15 to Arun Pattatheyil, Chief Executive Officer of Tata Medical Centre, stating he did not wish to stand for another term. The email was also marked to Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata and other trustees including Vijay Singh, Darius J Khambata, Leah Tata, Maya Tata and Neville Tata. Mistry specifically requested that his decision not to have his trusteeship renewed be officially recorded, emphasizing the importance of transparency and good governance while adhering to Ratan Tata's vision.
Mistry has served on the Tata Medical Centre Trust board since 2017 and his departure will leave the board to Tata Trusts chairperson Noel Tata, his children Leah, Maya and Neville Tata, and ex-defence secretary Vijay Singh, whose term ends next year, as reported by The Times of India. The Tata Medical Centre Trust is based in Kolkata and runs the 436-bed, not-for-profit tertiary cancer hospital that provides cancer treatment at affordable costs and undertakes screening, early detection, prevention, rehabilitation and palliative care. Mistry's decision marks a significant transition in the governance of this important healthcare institution.
This marks Mistry's sixth exit from institutions linked to the late industrialist since his death in October 2024. According to Mint, in July 2026, Mistry resigned as director of RNT Associates Private Limited, the investment firm founded by Ratan Tata that manages an investment portfolio worth more than ₹1,000 crore and holds stakes in companies including Ola Electric and Urban Company. His previous departures included stepping down as trustee of the Ratan Tata Endowment Trust and the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation, and his reappointment to the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust was not approved despite an earlier resolution for lifetime trusteeship. With the trusteeships changing hands under Ratan Tata's will, the directorship of RNT Associates was also transferred to the new trustees.
Mistry's departure from the Tata Medical Centre Trust is part of a broader leadership realignment within the conglomerate, as reported by Mint. His previous departure from three major philanthropic pillars—Sir Ratan Tata Trust, Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, and Bai Hirabai JN Tata Navsari Charitable Institution Trust—was finalised in October 2025. At that time, Mistry stated his resignation was motivated by the need to prevent any controversy that might harm the organisation's reputation, emphasising his commitment to ethical governance and quoting Ratan Tata's belief that "nobody is bigger than the institution it serves." This consolidation of power under Noel Tata was followed by another significant corporate shift: Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran's decision to step down in August 2026, who announced he would not seek reappointment when his second term ends in February 2027 after a six-month boardroom deadlock regarding a proposed third term.
