Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has announced the premature retirement of Managing Director Dinesh Pant following government approval. According to the latest notification from the Department of Financial Services (DFS), the government approved premature termination of Pant's appointment on voluntary basis under the LIC (Staff) Rules, 1960, and LIC Managing Directors service rules of 1988. The change takes effect from September 24, 2026, with the notification issued on Friday, marking a significant leadership change at India's largest life insurer. As per LIC's official filing, "The Government of India… has approved the voluntary retirement of Shri Dinesh Pant, Managing Director and Key Managerial Personnel ('KMP') of Life Insurance Corporation of India ('the Corporation'), with effect from the date of issue of said notification."
The government has officially approved the premature retirement of Pant through the formal notification dated September 24, 2026. The approval process was completed on Friday, September 25, with the announcement made through the state-owned insurance company's regulatory disclosure under Regulation 30 of the SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015. Following the approval, Dinesh Pant was relieved from LIC's services and ceased to be its MD and Key Managerial Personnel with effect from the close of September 24. Consequent to the above, Pant ceases to be the Chairperson of the Information Technology Strategy Committee and also ceases to be a member of the Executive Committee and Investment Committee. This comprehensive exit ensures complete separation from all key management responsibilities.
Pant joined LIC in 2002 after completing training by IIM Ahmedabad, initially working in the Investment Research team covering various operations including debt, equity, restructuring, and venture capital. He then moved to the Treasury Desk of LIC before being appointed as Appointed Actuary in 2017. According to LIC, Pant led the overall product and actuarial strategy during his five-year tenure as Product Actuary and Actuary for International Operations. He was subsequently appointed as Executive Director (Actuarial) effective June 1, 2025, before assuming the role of Managing Director. Pant holds degrees in Engineering and Law, along with a Master's in Business Administration, and is a Fellow Member of the Institute of Actuaries of India and the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, UK. As Appointed Actuary, he was part of the key management team that steered LIC's 2022 initial public offering and its subsequent growth strategy.
Pant's premature exit from LIC comes months after the Department of Financial Services named him Whole-time Member at the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) in mid-June this year for a term of five years or until he turns 65, whichever is earlier. Pant had taken over as LIC's Managing Director on June 1, 2025, with a term originally slated to run till May 2027. With his departure, LIC's board currently includes R. Doraiswamy as CEO & MD, alongside Ratnakar Patnaik as another Managing Director. The government notification issued on Friday does not name a successor, suggesting the corporation may see fresh appointments to its management team.
The leadership transition takes effect immediately from September 24, 2026, according to the exchange filing. Pant's departure marks the end of his tenure as Managing Director and Key Management Personnel (KMP) of the state-owned insurance corporation. LIC shares saw a modest increase amidst ongoing market volatility, closing with a 0.75% increase at ₹409 apiece during market hours. The positive market reaction suggests investor confidence in the company's leadership transition process. LIC continues to maintain its position as NSE's largest shareholder with a 10.72% stake, making it a significant player in the exchange's IPO proceedings.
