The government has appointed Dinesh Pant, Managing Director of LIC, and Girija Subramanian, ex-CMD of New India Assurance, as new members of insurance regulator IRDAI. According to sources, they have been appointed to fill vacancies in the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI). These appointments represent significant changes in India's insurance regulatory landscape, bringing extensive industry experience to the regulatory body. Pant's appointment as Whole-Time Director (Actuary) at IRDAI reduces LIC's serving managing directors to two, as one MD position remains vacant since Sat Pal Bhanoo's retirement in July 2025.
LIC now has only two serving managing directors - MD & CEO R Doraiswamy and two other MDs - Ratnakar Patnaik and R Chander. As per Business Standard, the state-owned insurance giant has four MD posts, apart from the managing director and chief executive officer (MD & CEO) post, making Pant's departure significant for the company's leadership structure. During the Q1 FY27 earnings media call, Doraiswamy stated that the company has taken up vacancies with the government and expects them to be filled soon. The LIC Act allows a maximum of four MDs, though it is not mandatory to have all vacancies filled at all times.
IRDAI currently has four whole-time members - Swaminathan Iyer (member, life), Deepak Sood (member, non-life), Girija Subramanian (member, distribution), and Rajay Sinha (member, finance) - apart from Ajay Seth as chairman. Pant will take charge as Member (Actuary), becoming the fifth member of the regulatory body. His extensive actuarial background and insurance sector experience will strengthen IRDAI's technical capabilities in product development, valuation, investments, risk management and international insurance operations. Pant has previously worked with IRDAI on committees dealing with areas such as product regulations, index-linked products, investments and risk-based capital.
Dinesh Pant's career spans more than three decades across insurance, actuarial science, investments and senior management. He joined LIC as a direct-recruit officer in September 1989 after working as a lecturer in civil engineering and government civil engineer roles. At LIC, Pant worked through various roles including Assistant Administrative Officer, Branch Head, and actuarial functions, gaining experience across important LIC branches in Delhi and Rajasthan. In 2002, after training at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, he joined LIC's Investment Research team covering debt, equity, restructuring, venture funds and project finance, later taking charge of the corporation's Treasury Desk. He also spent more than five years in Kenya with Kenindia Assurance Company as General Manager for life business, becoming Product Actuary in 2012 and Executive Director (Actuarial) and Appointed Actuary in 2022.
LIC remains the largest life insurer in the country with total premium income of ₹5.36 trillion in FY26 and assets under management (AUM) of ₹57.29 trillion. The company's size and market dominance make these leadership changes particularly significant for India's insurance sector. In October 2025, the government opened one MD post in the insurer to eligible candidates from both the private and public sectors, indicating ongoing efforts to strengthen LIC's management structure.
