The 2026 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has achieved the milestone of becoming the most-watched season in the tournament's history, with total reach surpassing 1.2 billion viewers across television and digital platforms, according to The Economic Times citing broadcaster JioStar. The tournament recorded a 7% year-on-year increase in reach, demonstrating the league's continued dominance as India's biggest sporting event. The cumulative watch time surged to 870 billion minutes, highlighting the sustained engagement levels throughout the season. Ishan Chatterjee, CEO, JioStar, Sports, stated that the season was "a journey of what a truly integrated sports platform should look like," emphasizing the platform's efforts to make every screen and interaction meaningful for fans.
The tournament finale, where the Royal Challengers Bengaluru secured their second successive IPL title, emerged as the most-viewed match in the league's history, attracting over 400 million viewers across TV and digital screens, as reported by The Economic Times. This record-breaking viewership for the championship match underscores the tournament's ability to capture national attention and maintain viewer interest through its conclusion. The final delivered a twofold jump in viewership to become the most-watched TATA IPL match ever, with Chatterjee noting that it "opened up new possibilities for sponsors, advertisers, distribution partners, and, more importantly, the fans." RCB defeated Punjab Kings by five wickets in a low-scoring final in Ahmedabad to clinch their second consecutive IPL title.
Digital consumption remained a key growth driver during the season, with connected TV (CTV) viewership rising 22% from the previous year, making it the fastest-growing platform for IPL consumption, according to The Economic Times. Digital video views increased 8% to 25 billion, supported by strong engagement from younger and affluent audiences. Growth of digital was particularly fuelled by two audience segments, namely affluent consumers and young viewers, reinforcing the TATA IPL's ability to attract premium consumers and future-facing audiences at an unparalleled scale. Regional-language coverage also gained significant traction, with digital watch time for local-language feeds rising 33% year-on-year.
JioStar attributed the growth to increasing demand for personalised and localised viewing experiences, as reported by The Economic Times. The broadcaster's coverage featured 12 languages, 30 feeds, multi-camera viewing options and the newly introduced 'Champions Wali Commentary', which brought together legends, former champions, and leading voices of the game. It also highlighted the integration of OpenAI and Swiggy-powered features aimed at enhancing fan engagement during live matches, with Chatterjee noting that these innovations enabled "brands to contextually participate in the viewer's experience." The platform also welcomed 125 new advertisers compared to last season, while 22 sponsors partnered with JioHotstar and 16 came on-board Star Sports Network.
With another landmark season successfully completed, JioStar is currently bringing the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 to viewers from June 12 to July 5, while the Men in Blue will embark on a white-ball tour of England for 5 T20Is and 3 ODIs, starting July 1 onwards, as reported by The Economic Times. This comprehensive sports coverage strategy demonstrates the platform's commitment to providing comprehensive sports entertainment across multiple formats and international events.
