India's electric vehicle market achieved a historic milestone in July 2026, with retail sales reaching 3,27,901 units, representing a 66% year-on-year increase and a 5.7% month-on-month growth from June's 3,10,268 units. According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), this surge meant that nearly one in every eight vehicles retailed in the country during the month was electric, demonstrating growing consumer acceptance across all segments. The passenger vehicle segment recorded 32,928 units with 83.1% YoY growth, while electric two-wheelers crossed the 2 lakh-unit mark for the first time with 88.3% YoY growth to 2,04,362 units. Electric three-wheelers also strengthened their dominance with 25.3% YoY growth to 87,055 units, achieving 65.1% electric penetration and making electric mobility the preferred choice in this category. EV penetration climbed to a record 12.7% in July, reflecting the rapid pace of India's transition to cleaner mobility.
India's EV penetration has increased from about one-fifth of global levels in 2020 to over two-fifths in 2024, with motorised two-wheelers (12.8 lakh units) and three-wheelers (8 lakh units) driving significant growth in 2025. The EV battery market is expected to grow from ₹2.71 billion in 2025 to ₹15.90 billion by 2034 at a CAGR of 21.70 per cent. According to Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), 16,561 of the 52,718 public charging stations available as of July 2026 are equipped with fast EV charging facilities, indicating rapid infrastructure expansion. The broad-based growth across all vehicle categories underscores the accelerating pace of India's shift towards electric mobility, with the retail industry posting its best-ever July performance for the first time with total sales of 25,91,138 units, an increase of 25.89% year-on-year.
In the passenger vehicle segment, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) continued to lead with 13,678 units, followed by Mahindra & Mahindra at 7,742 units and JSW MG Motor India at 5,689 units. Tata Motors showed exceptional performance with 101.8% YoY growth in July 2026, while Mahindra reached 7,677 registrations with 124.7% YoY growth. The entry-level Tata Tiago EV sold 2,292 units in June 2026, making it one of the top-selling EV models for Tata Motors. In the two-wheeler segment, TVS Motor retained the top spot with 55,499 units, followed by Bajaj Auto at 45,613 units and Ather Energy at 30,357 units. Ola Electric sold 14,106 units during the month, a decrease of 23.54% year-on-year. Mahindra Group remained the market leader in electric three-wheelers with 14,191 units, closely followed by Bajaj Auto at 13,442 units.
Electric commercial vehicles recorded one of the strongest growth rates with retail sales surging 168.6% year-on-year to 3,556 units from 1,324 units in July 2025, with their market share more than doubling to 3.57% from 1.65% a year ago. Tata Motors remained the segment leader with 1,306 units. Indian EVs have made strong international headway, with exports rising from $1.2 million in 2020 to $84 million in 2024. Top export destinations include Nepal, Indonesia and Japan, as reported by the government. Investment activity remains robust, with the sector raising approximately $1.4 billion in FY25, nearly 27 per cent higher than 2024. EV manufacturers secured around $1.2 billion of this funding, with Delhi emerging as the top city for EV investments.
The government has been driving electric mobility since 2015 through multiple industry schemes including FAME and the PLI scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cells and battery localisation. India aims for 30 per cent of all vehicle sales to be electric by 2030 and plans 1.32 million charging stations by 2030 to strengthen the ecosystem. The recent trade deal between India and the European Union envisages gradual reduction of tariffs, while the EU has increased tariffs on Chinese EVs to as high as 35.3%. This creates significant opportunities for Indian manufacturers to benefit from the China Plus One strategy and labor cost advantages over Chinese competitors. FADA Vice President Sai Giridhar noted that the data showed EV adoption was no longer a future projection but a marketplace reality, with the broad-based growth across all vehicle categories demonstrating the accelerating pace of India's electric mobility transition.
