
The Department of Financial Services (DFS), Ministry of Finance has officially approved the appointment of Hitesh Rameshchandra Joshi as Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) of General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC Re), India's national reinsurer. According to an official order issued by the Ministry, Joshi's appointment is effective June 16, 2026, marking the formal transition from his interim role. The appointment was approved by the Ministry of Finance on June 15, 2026, and formally disclosed by the corporation to stock exchanges on June 16, 2026. Joshi's tenure will continue until September 30, 2028, or until further government orders, whichever is earlier. The Ministry has directed GIC Re to furnish a copy of the Board's approval for the appointment along with details regarding the date on which Joshi formally assumes charge of the office.
Joshi brings over three decades of experience in the insurance and reinsurance sector to his new role. As reported by CNBC TV18 and boardstewardship.com, his career at GIC Re has spanned multiple departments including domestic and international reinsurance, retrocession, finance, enterprise risk management, strategic planning, internal audit, investor relations, and budgeting. During his tenure as Executive Director, he oversaw human resources, international business operations, information technology, vigilance compliance, claims, legal affairs, audit and compliance functions. Prior to this elevation, Joshi served as Executive Director at GIC Re, where he handled several critical portfolios including reinsurance operations, enterprise risk management, finance, internal audit, investor relations, and strategic planning. He also oversaw HR, IT, claims, compliance, legal, vigilance, and digital transformation functions during his tenure as Executive Director. Joshi is a Fellow of the Insurance Institute of India and holds a postgraduate degree in Accountancy from the University of Mumbai and a master's degree in Financial Management from the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies.
As CMD, Joshi is expected to steer GIC Re's growth strategy, enhance its market position, and further reinforce its role as a key pillar of India's insurance ecosystem while expanding its international reinsurance footprint.
