Thousands of workers at a Flipkart warehouse located on the Farrukhnagar-Jhajjar border in Haryana have been on strike for more than 24 hours, according to the *Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers (IFAT)**. The strike began after workers reported significant wage reductions and alleged non-compliance with minimum wage norms at the facility. As per IFAT's statement, the federation has been actively monitoring the situation and documenting worker concerns throughout the ongoing strike action.
According to IFAT's statement on Monday, workers had reported a reduction in monthly earnings from around ₹18,000 to between ₹12,000 and ₹14,000. The federation further claimed that some categories of workers were being paid as little as ₹50 for an entire night shift, raising serious concerns about wage compliance and labour standards at the facility. These wage cuts represent a significant reduction in workers' income and highlight potential violations of statutory minimum wage requirements.
The workers are demanding payment in line with statutory minimum wage norms, restoration of wages, and improved workplace facilities, as reported by IFAT. Additionally, workers have sought access to drinking water, rest areas, cooling facilities and other basic amenities amid extreme heat conditions. IFAT co-founder and national general secretary Shaik Salauddin described the allegations regarding wages as "deeply disturbing" and requiring immediate attention from Flipkart's management and labour authorities. Salauddin emphasized that "workers are the backbone of India's e-commerce industry and deserve fair wages, safe working conditions, and dignity at work."
An email sent to Flipkart did not elicit a response till the time of going to press, according to IFAT's statement. This lack of response from the company's management highlights the urgency of the situation and the federation's concerns about the company's commitment to addressing worker grievances. The silence from Flipkart has prompted IFAT to consider escalating the matter further through national consultations and potential nationwide solidarity campaigns.
