Food safety authorities have suspended the food-business licences of four Domino's Pizza outlets across Maharashtra, including three in Mumbai, following a comprehensive special inspection drive conducted between July 10 and August 11, 2026. According to the Maharashtra FDA, the regulatory actions were taken due to direct violations of the Food Safety and Standards (Food Business Licensing and Registration) Regulations, 2011, specifically pertaining to the mandatory hygiene and sanitary practices outlined in Schedule 4. The special drive inspected 104 chain restaurants across Maharashtra, leading to two business closures, 95 improvement notices, and five licence suspensions. As reported by PTI, the action has been taken for alleged violations of food safety and hygiene norms, with the FDA headed by IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe taking decisive action against establishments operated by major food chains.
The suspended outlets are located in Vile Parle West, Borivali West, and Ghatkopar West in Mumbai, along with a fourth outlet in Satara district. As reported by PTI, the action taken by the Tukaram Mundhe-headed Maharashtra FDA also led to the suspension of a Domino's outlet in Karad. The most extensive list of violations was recorded at the Domino's Pizza branch located inside R-City Mall on Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg, Ghatkopar (West). The Malkapur outlet in Satara district was found to have about 40 per cent non-compliance, with deficiencies in basic facilities, equipment, cleanliness and pest control. At the Karad establishments, the FDA prescribed corrective measures for pizza preparation, including separate ovens and proper segregation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian pizzas, separate pans, and appropriate labelling of sauces and pizza toppings with packing and expiry dates.
During the inspection of the Ghatkopar outlet, authorities found evidence of pest infestation and noted that the management lacked effective pest-control measures or related documentation. According to the Maharashtra FDA, the outlet failed to follow standard FIFO (First-In, First-Out) and FEFO (First-Expired, First-Out) inventory practices in its food storage, and proper temperature controls were not being maintained. The inspection also revealed a lack of proper cleaning and sanitation facilities, as well as the absence of a defined cleaning schedule. The outlet was found deficient in cleanliness, sanitation scheduling and pest control measures, besides failing to maintain proper temperature control in food storage.
The R-City Mall branch failed to produce mandatory operational and safety records, including food-grade certificates and necessary documentation for materials coming into contact with food. As reported by the Maharashtra FDA, the outlet also lacked essential records regarding its food handlers, such as proof of cleanliness, medical examinations, licensing, and the use of protective gear like gloves and aprons. Additionally, management was unable to provide routine food and water testing reports, calibration and preventive maintenance records, or demonstrate an effective protocol for resolving customer complaints. The authority also flagged the absence of food-grade certificates and records relating to calibration, preventive maintenance, food and water testing and food safety.
The Vile Parle outlet was situated at Shop Nos. 6, 8, and 10 on S.V. Road (D.J. Road corner) and was found to have deficiencies related to the display of its FSSAI licence, potable water, food storage, pest control and hygiene facilities. The FDA directed proper temperature monitoring of frozen food, segregation of food and non-food items, rodent and pest prevention and adequate hand-washing facilities. The Borivali outlet was located on the ground and first floors of Shop No. 14 on Veer Savarkar Road, near the St. Francis School Ground in IC Colony, which was also penalized for failing to adhere to the mandated food safety protocols. The FDA found 15 per cent non-compliance at this location and directed corrective measures covering food storage, temperature monitoring, food testing, cleanliness and pest control. The licences will remain suspended pending compliance with the Food Safety and Standards Regulations. The authority has launched a massive crackdown against violations of food safety and hygiene norms at food establishments, including famous hotels and clubs, ever since Mundhe took over as FDA commissioner in May.
