Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) and the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Wednesday to collaborate on biofuels, biomass utilisation, waste-to-resource solutions, and circular economy initiatives. According to reports from ANI, this partnership represents a significant step toward sustainable development in India's energy sector as the country accelerates its transition towards cleaner energy and sustainable resource management.
The agreement covers the full biofuels value chain, including Compressed Biogas (CBG). As reported by ANI, the collaboration will cover areas such as assessment of feedstock and development of supply chains, biomass and waste resource management, utilisation of by-products, technology assessment, pilot and demonstration projects, market development, capacity building and knowledge sharing. The partnership aims to combine BPCL's growing biofuels portfolio with CSE's expertise in research, policy advocacy, waste management and sustainable development.
The MoU addresses the assessment and utilisation of biofuel by-products such as Fermented Organic Manure (FOM), digestate, Bio-CO₂, and Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS). According to ANI, the initiative will also look at developing sustainable value chains and potential carbon credit opportunities associated with bioenergy projects. Specific projects under the MoU will be governed by separate agreements defining scope, responsibilities, and implementation mechanisms.
BPCL Director (Marketing) Subhankar Sen emphasized that the collaboration marked an important stage for the company, stating that this close collaboration with CSE represents a defining moment in their organization's life cycle. As reported by ANI, Sen noted that the partnership combines strengths to achieve what neither organization could do alone, entering an era where organizational success is defined by collaboration and partnerships. CSE's Director General highlighted that the partnership would leverage CSE's expertise with municipalities and CBG ecosystem alongside BPCL's industrial capabilities and execution strength.
BPCL, a Fortune Global 500 company and India's second-largest oil marketing company, operates refineries in Mumbai, Kochi, and Bina with a combined capacity of around 35.3 million tonnes per annum. According to ANI, the company has set a target to achieve net-zero emissions in Scope 1 and Scope 2 by 2040. CSE is a New Delhi-based public interest research and advocacy organisation focused on environment and development issues.
