Adani Defence & Aerospace has signed a five-year agreement with Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL) to supply indigenously produced 7.62x39 mm ammunition for AK-203 assault rifles being manufactured in India. According to reports from PTI, this partnership creates an integrated domestic supply chain for the India-Russia rifle programme, bringing together rifle production by IRRPL and ammunition manufacturing by Adani Defence within India's defence manufacturing ecosystem. The agreement was announced on Saturday, September 5, formalizing the collaboration between the two companies to ensure a domestic supply of ammunition for the programme and help maintain a steady flow of supplies during the five-year contract period. As per PTI, the partnership connects rifle manufacturing by Indo-Russian Rifles with ammunition production by Adani Defence, bringing two key components of the AK-203 programme together within India's defence manufacturing ecosystem.
IRRPL was incorporated in 2019 under an India-Russia intergovernmental agreement to manufacture AK-203 assault rifles for the Indian Armed Forces, with its manufacturing facility located at Korwa in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi district. The joint venture comprises Indian shareholders Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Limited and Munitions India Limited, along with Russian shareholders Concern Kalashnikov and Rosoboronexport. According to PTI, IRRPL was set up in 2019 following an intergovernmental agreement between India and Russia to produce AK-203 assault rifles for the Indian Armed Forces. The Ministry of Defence has designated IRRPL to undertake domestic manufacturing of the AK-203, with the government signing a contract in December 2021 for the production of 6,01,427 AK-203 rifles at its Korwa facility. The latest ammunition agreement further strengthens the programme's domestic manufacturing network by bringing together Indian-made AK-203 rifles and locally produced ammunition.
Under the agreement, Adani Defence will provide the ammunition required for the AK-203 project throughout the five-year contract period, providing an Indian source of supply and supporting continuity of ammunition availability over the contract period. According to PTI, Adani Defence has built the capability to manufacture small-calibre ammunition in India, including through its facility in Kanpur. The agreement further strengthens domestic capabilities across the small-arms supply chain and supports the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative aimed at boosting self-reliance in defence production. The deal is expected to further expand the country's domestic capacity across the small-arms supply chain and contribute to the government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative by creating integrated domestic supply chains for critical military equipment programmes.
The agreement takes the localisation of the India-Russia defence programme a step further, reducing dependence on overseas suppliers for an essential component of the weapon system. As reported by PTI, this initiative supports the government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat push for greater self-reliance in defence manufacturing, demonstrating the strategic importance of creating integrated domestic supply chains for critical military equipment programmes. The arrangement provides an Indian source for the ammunition required for the programme and supports continuity of supply during the contract period. In July, Adani Defence and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) signed a landmark agreement for AEW&C-MKII, India's next-generation Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) programme. According to PTI, the programme makes Adani Defence the first private Indian company to be entrusted with the development, integration and lifecycle support of an airborne mission platform of this scale and complexity. Adani Defence and DRDO will jointly develop, manufacture and integrate the airborne mission systems on six modified Airbus A321 aircraft for the IAF, with the programme including integrated logistics, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), and technical support for up to 30 years.
