Commercial LPG cylinders are being sold for ₹200 to ₹600 less than official rates at some agencies in rural Uttar Pradesh. In Kushinagar, the official rate for a 19-kg commercial cylinder is around ₹2,946, while some customers are reportedly getting the cylinder for ₹2,400 to ₹2,700. The lower prices are not the result of a nationwide reduction announced by oil marketing companies, but rather individual agency discounts in selected rural markets. According to recent reports, this discount is only happening in select rural spots and isn't a nationwide thing, with the main reason being not enough demand. As per News18, the reduction is limited to certain rural locations and is not a nationwide price cut.
The price gap is attributed to subdued demand from commercial users in several rural markets, leaving some agencies with excess stock. Restaurants, hotels, food stalls, sweet shops and catering businesses are among major users of 19-kg LPG cylinders, and demand from these segments can be relatively limited in smaller markets. With fewer commercial buyers, some agencies may be holding more filled cylinders than usual, making discounts necessary to clear stock and maintain the supply cycle. The availability of commercial cylinders at reduced rates in some villages and small towns is being attributed to lower demand, according to News18. Gas agencies need to return empty cylinders when they receive a vehicle carrying a fresh consignment. If enough empty cylinders are not returned, it can affect future supplies, the report said.
Household consumers should not assume that lower commercial LPG prices mean domestic cylinder rates have also been reduced. A 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder in Delhi costs around ₹942, while the 19-kg commercial cylinder is priced at ₹2,747.50. In Kushinagar, the official domestic cylinder price is around ₹1,014, against an official commercial cylinder price of nearly ₹2,946. The ₹2,400-Rs 2,700 prices being reported in parts of Kushinagar relate specifically to commercial cylinders sold by some agencies, with domestic cylinder rates remaining unchanged at ₹942 in Delhi. The cheaper rates being reported in some rural areas apply to 19-kg commercial LPG cylinders and not to domestic cylinders, according to News18.
The improvement in LPG availability has been accompanied by a change in the refill booking cycle for rural consumers. Rural customers can now book a domestic LPG refill after 25 days, compared with the earlier 45-day interval. Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum have reportedly adopted the revised booking period in rural areas. The Petroleum Ministry introduced the change after gas supplies improved and the backlog came down. The shorter booking interval is intended to bring rural consumers closer to the refill cycle available to urban customers as supply conditions improve and earlier backlogs ease. This means rural customers can now book domestic LPG cylinders at the same 25-day interval applicable to urban customers, according to News18.
The temporary discounts could offer relief to small businesses that rely on commercial LPG for daily operations, with tea shops, eateries, sweet shops and catering units seeing direct reduction in fuel costs. However, the benefit is unlikely to be uniform across the region, depending on inventory, local demand and fresh supply movements. The situation is different from a few months ago, when several areas faced difficulties in obtaining commercial cylinders. Customers had to deal with long queues and limited availability during that period. Supply conditions have since improved, News18 reported. Customers buying commercial LPG at discounted prices should verify cylinder weight, seals, distributor details and bill amounts, collect receipts for every transaction, and ensure cylinders are supplied through authorized LPG distributors. The discounts are limited to select rural locations in Uttar Pradesh and aren't available nationwide. It is also important to distinguish between domestic and commercial LPG cylinders, as the two have different uses and prices. The lower rates reported in some rural areas are linked to local demand and stock levels, therefore customers should not assume the same reduction will be available at every LPG agency or across all locations.
