Two former ICICI Bank executives have been appointed to lead major private lenders, reinforcing the bank's reputation as a talent incubator. Anup Kumar Saha has been named MD & CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank for a three-year term starting January 1, succeeding Ashok Vaswani who is stepping down for personal reasons. Meanwhile, Anup Bagchi has been cleared by the Reserve Bank to lead HDFC Bank, the largest private sector lender, replacing Sashidhar Jagdishan who decided not to seek reappointment after his second three-year term ends October 26. As per Business Standard, with Bagchi's appointment as MD & CEO of HDFC Bank, the ICICI group's influence as a training ground for financial services leadership has grown further, with several of its former senior executives now head banks and other financial services firms.
The appointments highlight how ICICI Bank, SBI, Axis Bank, and other major financial institutions have emerged as key training grounds for financial services leaders who later take up top industry roles. As per Business Standard, State Bank of India has a similar track record, having produced a steady stream of senior executives who have gone on to lead financial institutions and technology firms. More recently, Axis Bank has emerged as another important source of leadership talent, with a growing number of its former executives moving into senior roles across the sector. This pattern demonstrates how these banks have developed systematic approaches to developing banking talent and continue to shape India's financial sector leadership.
The appointments highlight ICICI Bank's consistent ability to develop banking leaders, with several former executives now leading major financial institutions. Notable alumni include Shikha Sharma who served as MD & CEO of Axis Bank from 2009 to 2018, V. Vaidyanathan currently leading IDFC Bank, and Madhabi Puri Buch who served as SEBI chairperson. Other prominent alumni include Nilesh Shah at Kotak Mahindra Asset Management, Rajiv Sabharwal at Tata Capital, and Sonjoy Chatterjee at Goldman Sachs India Securities. As per Business Standard, ICICI Bank once again holds the record for producing the most number of CEOs in India's financial sector, with the CEO of India's largest private bank also coming from India's second-largest private bank.
Anup Bagchi, 55, brings over 25 years of experience including a 14-year stint at ICICI Bank where he led retail verticals, and has served as MD & CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance since 2023. Anup Saha has over three decades of experience, including 25 years in banks and NBFCs, with a significant 14-year tenure at ICICI Bank where he led retail verticals. Both executives share the common link of being IIT-IIM alumni, adding to their professional credentials. As per Business Standard, Saha's announcement earlier today that he would take over at Kotak Mahindra Bank also fits the pattern of former ICICI executives heading rival banks.
