Only ~₹775 crore of the ₹3,000 crore capex was spent by 30 June 2026 — roughly a quarter of the programme. With steel capacity commissioning in H2 FY27 and mines from FY28, three-quarters of the spend is still ahead, so the balance sheet stays unlevered but the earnings payoff is two-plus years away.
Planned pellet plant shutdown plus higher coal and freight costs are the specific drivers behind the EBITDA margin slide to 18% from 22%. The shutdown is self-inflicted and temporary, which makes the margin trough more reversible than one caused by structural TMT price weakness.
Management has already guided Q2 FY27 to be muted with recovery only in Q3/Q4 — so the 19 Oct board meeting cannot deliver the margin improvement the rally is pricing. The genuinely market-moving item is the promised medium-term growth plan, not the quarterly numbers.
