The artificial intelligence revolution is fundamentally changing how people consume information, with AI-generated podcasts emerging as a major trend. According to reports from Business Standard, Spotify has joined Amazon and Google in this competitive landscape, each offering different approaches to AI-powered audio content creation. Google was among the first companies to introduce podcast-style Audio Overviews in NotebookLM, but multiple platforms are now entering this space with similar features.
Spotify has announced a significant expansion of its AI podcast capabilities with the introduction of Personal Podcasts, a new tool that allows users to generate short audio episodes tailored to their interests and listening habits. As reported by TechRadar, this feature operates on a prompt basis, allowing users to create daily briefings that include local weather, live music events, and daily news headlines across different topics. Users can schedule updates for every day or weekly, and the system can also generate episodes that dive deeper into specific topics, connecting users with related podcast episodes for further exploration. The feature works with text prompts and allows users to add context by attaching PDFs and website links, with information pulled into the generated episodes.
Spotify has introduced real-time AI-powered search capabilities that enable users to ask questions about episodes they're currently listening to or watching. According to TechRadar, users can tap the AI DJ search bar in the Spotify home page to launch podcast episodes and then proceed with questions. The system provides answers in real-time, allowing users to get more information about topics mentioned in episodes or find additional podcasts covering the same subject. Users can also ask generic questions such as 'play the latest episode from Dissect'. This feature is rolling out to Premium mobile subscribers in the US, Sweden, and Ireland first, as part of Spotify's larger plan to expand its podcast interface.
Google's NotebookLM has maintained a significant lead in multilingual support with its Audio Overviews feature operating in more than 50 languages since 2024. As reported by Business Standard, the tool allows users to upload articles, notes, research papers, or documents and convert them into conversational audio discussions between two AI-generated hosts. In 2025, Google expanded this feature to support Hindi, Urdu, Marathi, and Konkani languages. Beyond Audio Overviews, NotebookLM now offers AI-generated slide decks and video overviews, providing comprehensive multimedia content creation capabilities.
Spotify's Personal Podcasts come with a fixed allocation of credits included with their subscription each month, similar to the company's monthly audiobook listening hours allowance. As reported by TechRadar, users can purchase additional credits if they find they can't get enough of the generated podcasts. Despite the competitive landscape, each platform serves distinct user needs and capabilities. Spotify Studio focuses on personalised listening and daily lifestyle integration, Amazon Alexa Podcasts on quick, topic-based learning through voice assistants, and NotebookLM on research, learning, and document summarisation. NotebookLM currently maintains an advantage in multilingual support, while the broader trend indicates companies are increasingly turning AI into an audio companion for information explanation, summarisation, and personalisation in podcast form.
