
Elon Musk has unveiled ambitious plans for Starlink's future service, revealing that the company will offer a single Starlink account covering both home antenna and mobile phone connectivity. In an All-In Summit interview, Musk explained that upon full deployment, the technology will enable high-definition video streaming even in the world's most isolated locations. The service would allow SpaceX to provide high-bandwidth connectivity directly from satellites to mobile phones, though he noted that hardware changes would be required in existing devices since current phones do not support the frequencies needed for the service. As per Musk, phones that are able to use the spectrum that was acquired probably start shipping in around two years.
The implementation of this comprehensive service requires significant technological advancement and coordination across multiple sectors. Musk explained that Starlink would need to deploy satellites capable of communicating on the new frequencies while working with handset manufacturers to incorporate support for those frequencies into mobile devices. The advancement in high-speed frequency technology and the required hardware changes would take time, with Musk estimating a two-year time frame for full deployment. The technology would connect handset devices directly to satellites to provide high-bandwidth connectivity, representing a fundamental shift in how satellite internet services are delivered.
Despite the ambitious expansion plans, Musk acknowledged that existing telecom operators would continue to play an important role in the market. As reported by NDTV Profit, he stated that "We are not gonna put the other carriers out of business. They are still gonna be around cause they own a lot of spectrum." However, he envisioned that users could have a Starlink account alongside services offered by traditional carriers such as AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon, describing it as "a comprehensive solution." This approach aligns with Starlink's current strategy as it faces new competition from Reliance Jio's planned 1,650-satellite constellation, which could potentially delay Starlink's entry into the Indian market. The company continues its regulatory efforts, having approached the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) for the second time to submit a fresh authorisation request for its Gen 2 satellite constellation.
The push for satellite connectivity comes amid significant connectivity challenges in India's rural areas.
