India is demonstrating unprecedented enthusiasm for AI integration in the workplace, with 57% of Indian respondents already using AI tools in their current roles and 86% feeling equipped to learn and apply AI-related skills, according to a new survey by ACCA. This adoption rate significantly exceeds global averages, positioning India as a world leader in workplace AI implementation. Employer support is also accelerating, with 50% of respondents reporting their organisations are actively offering AI skill-building opportunities in 2026, up sharply from 37% the previous year. The survey reveals that 52% of Indian respondents trust AI to support fair and unbiased hiring decisions, well above the global average of 43%, with Gen Z leading confidence at 54% compared to 48% among Gen Y and just 27% among Gen X.
India has achieved a significant milestone by ranking fifth globally in digital economy performance for 2026, according to the State of India's Digital Economy report by the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) and the Prosus Centre for Internet and Digital Economy (IPCIDE). This position marks India's advancement over major developed economies including Germany, France, Japan, UK and Canada in digital performance metrics. The report highlights India's rapid progress in digital transformation and AI adoption as key drivers of this global ranking. As per the latest findings, India climbed to fifth in global rankings (eighth in 2025), as digital momentum accelerated in an increasingly competitive environment. The country generated $328 billion in digitally delivered trade and is home to the world's second-largest AI talent pool.
Despite India's strong AI talent base and global ranking, the country faces a stark funding imbalance that threatens its sovereign AI ambitions. India receives only about 1% of global private investment in AI, according to the State of India's Digital Economy (SIDE) 2026 report, despite holding the world's second-largest AI talent pool after the United States and accounting for around 26% of global AI users. The funding gap persists despite India announcing more than $200 billion in AI infrastructure commitments — $110 billion from Reliance Industries Ltd. and tens of billions more from Google, Microsoft and Amazon. Most of this capacity will be built and operated by foreign cloud providers, with training runs costing $100 million to $1 billion and infrastructure running into the hundreds of billions. India's late start in building large language models has become a handicap, with companies like Sarvam AI struggling to secure funding from global backers like SoftBank, Prosus, Andreessen Horowitz, and General Atlantic.

The country's linguistic diversity, with models working across 22 official languages at scale, provides unique advantages over global competitors. However, roughly a third of Indian government systems run on foreign cloud providers, with Microsoft blocking Russia-backed Nayara Energy from accessing data last year serving as a stark reminder of data control risks. India's Digital Public Infrastructure, including Aadhaar, UPI, and DigiLocker systems, enables what officials describe as 'presence-less, paperless, cashless' services for over a billion people, creating a foundation for AI deployment at population scale. The next phase will depend on effectively leveraging this infrastructure while addressing the structural constraints that currently limit India's AI innovation potential.
