
India is accelerating its sovereign artificial intelligence ambitions with the Centre planning to acquire a small stake in homegrown AI startup Sarvam as part of its support under the IndiaAI Mission, according to The Economic Times. This initiative aims to strengthen India's domestic AI capabilities while creating demand for a new class of professionals with expertise in AI governance, data residency, sovereign cloud architecture, model monitoring, compliance and Indian-language AI deployment. The shift is being driven by enterprises and governments increasingly looking to deploy AI models that keep data within national borders and comply with local regulations.
According to Neelkanth Mishra, member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, India's IT services industry is undergoing a significant workforce transition due to AI adoption, but widespread job losses are premature. As reported by Business Standard, Mishra noted that companies will need fewer people focused purely on coding and more employees skilled in areas such as design, user interface (UI) and user experience (UX). The organisational boundaries themselves may shift as some work previously outsourced to IT services firms is increasingly being brought in-house. Most layoffs have been concentrated in software companies because labour is their largest cost and software development is increasingly being automated, but lower software development costs could drive higher consumption through the Jevons paradox.
According to Tridib Mukherjee, Chief AI Officer at IDfy, Machine Learning Operations (MLOps) competency, which was once a specialist expectation, is now required across the board from engineers to scientists. "If you're touching a model, you're expected to understand its operationalisation. Sovereign AI adds a harder constraint layer on top: data residency, sector-specific compliance, and regulatory architecture. That combination demands a profile that didn't exist three years ago," Mukherjee explained. Manish Chasta, Co-Founder & CTO of Eventus Security, noted that India's sovereign AI initiative is creating an entirely different segment of jobs focused on how to responsibly build AI, how to secure it, and then how to enforce and manage governance requirements.
As sovereign AI adoption grows, demand for roles in data residency, language models for Indian languages, regulatory compliance, and industry-specific applications in finance, health, and government services will also rise, according to Ashish Kumar, Managing Director at OptiValue Tek. Chetan Mangalwedhe, Founder and CEO of TalentiFi-X, highlighted that AI governance is emerging as a high-value, billable skill with clients in regulated sectors such as government, finance, and healthcare paying premiums for it. IT firms are packaging this expertise into transformation deals, moving from pure time-and-materials to outcome-based models.
Mishra emphasized that AI should be viewed as a strategic capability spanning chip design, electronics manufacturing, data centres, energy infrastructure and applications, particularly as global access to advanced technologies could become increasingly restricted. Using semiconductors as an example, he noted that while manufacturing facilities are important for supply chain resilience, much of the economic value accrues from chip design. India must build capabilities across the AI value chain instead of focusing only on foundation models or data sovereignty, with the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) working to strengthen India's semiconductor design ecosystem and expand incentives under the Design Linked Incentive scheme. The recent restrictions around Anthropic's Mythos models demonstrate why ownership matters, as intellectual property control from India is crucial for the country's AI leadership ambitions.
