The government is collaborating with the National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) to develop an artificial intelligence curriculum for undergraduate programmes. According to reports from PTI, Nasscom President Rajesh Nambiar confirmed that the government is working with the IT industry body to review and modify the AI curriculum for all undergraduate programmes. This initiative aims to address the growing need for AI-related skills among graduates as AI integration increases across various sectors.
The curriculum development process is expected to take approximately six months to finalise, as reported by PTI. Nambiar explained that various regulatory bodies including the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the University Grants Commission (UGC) need to review and approve the proposed curriculum. The timeline reflects the comprehensive nature of updating educational frameworks to align with current AI requirements.
Nambiar highlighted a significant challenge facing current computer science graduates, stating that 'AI is getting more and more into every job... if you do go through the normal computer science course, when you come out of it, nobody is going to hire you'. As reported by PTI, this represents a critical gap between traditional computer science education and the practical AI skills required by employers. The new curriculum aims to bridge this gap by providing comprehensive AI training from the undergraduate level.
This undergraduate curriculum development builds upon the government's existing AI education initiatives. According to reports from PTI, in October last year, the government announced plans to introduce an AI curriculum in all schools from class three onwards. This comprehensive approach demonstrates the government's commitment to integrating AI education across all levels of the educational system, from primary to tertiary education, ensuring that students are prepared for the AI-driven future of work.
The demand for AI professionals is experiencing significant growth across India, with salaries for AI and ML Engineers in Visakhapatnam typically ranging from ₹5.4 LPA to ₹7.8 LPA, according to AmbitionBox. This represents a substantial increase in compensation for AI-skilled professionals as companies accelerate their digital transformation initiatives. Leading recruiters including Google, Microsoft, Amazon, IBM, Accenture, TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL Technologies, and Deloitte are actively hiring AI experts for roles in automation, machine learning, data analytics, and intelligent systems.
