Google has announced significant enhancements to its personalisation capabilities across multiple platforms, giving users unprecedented control over their digital experience. According to reports from Investing.com, the changes, announced on Thursday, will allow users to customise preferred sources, topics and content based on their interests. The company is expanding options to customise audio news briefings as part of its broader strategy to make services more tailored to individual preferences.
Google is expanding personalisation in Search by introducing Preferred Sources functionality, allowing users to choose content from selected websites to appear more prominently when relevant to searches. As reported by Investing.com, the company released an interactive "Preferred Sources" button that publishers can embed on their pages. When readers click the button, it adds the site as a Preferred Source on Google and directs them back to where they left off on the publisher's page. Users have already selected more than 600,000 unique sources, with the button code available through Google Search Central documentation for publishers. The latest data shows this number has increased from more than 345,000 in May, indicating growing adoption among publishers.
The company is making it easier to control what appears in Discover feeds by enabling users to specify which topics, websites or types of content they want to see more or less of. According to Investing.com, users will soon be able to customize their Discover feed by tapping any three-dot menu to tell Google the exact topics or links they want to see more or less of in their own words. The feed will adjust immediately and remember user requests, allowing for more specific instructions about content preferences. As reported by Storyboard18, users can now give more specific instructions about what they want to see in Discover through the three-dot menu on content in the Google app, with the feed using these requests to adjust recommendations and remember the preferences.
Google is adding more personalisation options to Google News, including the ability to tailor news consumption around individual interests. According to Investing.com, the company is also making it easier to customize daily audio briefings in the Google News app on Android. Users can now curate briefings by choosing specific topics, with clear source attribution and links to full articles to curate their briefings. The preferred sources appear in Top Stories, AI Overviews, and AI Mode, with publishers participating in Google's news AI pilot program providing deeper dives into key stories in the audio briefings. The latest set of features includes easier customisation of daily audio briefings in the Google News app on Android, where users can choose specific topics, clear source attribution, and links to full articles to curate their briefings.
