Despite the supercomputer victory, experts suggest the results may not reflect China's AI capabilities. Technology and policy experts noted that cloud computing companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google have built massive supercomputers for AI work but typically don't compete for TOP500 spots. A study by AI policy researchers found that SpaceX-owned xAI's Colossus system was likely more powerful than El Capitan, with experts suggesting that if hyperscalers submitted their systems, the 'world's fastest' would not crack the top five. The LineShine system does not contain any advanced AI chips likely because the tools to make those chips remain subject to US export controls.
The Chinese victory more likely represents Beijing's desire for recognition of its chip design efforts, according to experts interviewed by Reuters.
